Acting techniques for auditions, examinations or just for the joy of improving your performing skills! - Tell me about your qualifications.
- I studied Drama at the University of Reading and after graduating in 1991 I worked at the BBC Radio Drama Rep co, before starting teaching in 1995. I am passionate about the subject and actually started the Drama Dept at my second school in 1998 where I built up the dept from 4 pupils in a terrapin hut to persuading the school governors to build a Performing Arts Centre in 2005! There are now over 60 pupils studying drama at GCSE and A level. It is one of the most popular and successful departments in the school. As a former student who is now studying drama at the Central School of Speech and Drama quoted "Her rigorous and demanding standards raised my own expectations of myself. She was unfailingly supportive, caring, motivational, informative, interesting and above all inspirational. Her teaching transformed my love of drama into a passion".
Indeed the drama dept was at the forefront of the school being awarded "Artsmark" Silver in 2009. I have won 35 trophies for directing festival drama, including being one of six schools in the UK to be selected to perform a devised play for Tomorrow's World at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in 2003.. Our AS level drama group won the semi-final of the All England Drama Festival at Leigh on Sea in 2009 and was subsequently selected to perform at the British All Winners' Final in Woking in July 2009, where we were awarded the Buxton trophy for the "Most Promising Performance by a youth group.". - What kind of experience do you have?
- I have taught all keystages from 11-18 and have also taught LAMDA Speech and Drama (ages 7-18). I have regularly tutored GCSE and A level pupils on a one-to-one basis, successfully overcoming the "fears of the written paper". Out of school I have directed many productions and regularly run workshops for youth groups.
I have also successfully helped students prepare for university interviews, audition preparation for drama school and preparation for A level monologues and duologues for practical examinations. - How much do you charge?
- My charges are £20.00 per hour. I am also happy to tutor students in very small groups (minimum 2 and maximum 4) where the cost per student becomes between £10.00 and £15.00 per hour, depending on the group size. I also offer a reduced rate if students want to book more than an hour at a time. Please speak to me to discuss different options. My charges for "online" tutoring are £20.00 to set and mark a GCSE or A level essay. This includes phone calls or emails from students to myself to give advice and a second re-mark. Any subsequent re-marks cost £10.00 per essay. Payment is via Paypal or personal cheque. It is as simple and economical as that. Please read my testimonials from past students to see how it helped them achieve amazing grades.

Get an A* for the GCSE Drama written paper!
Just about all GCSE drama students love the practical element and often dread the written element. Why? Often because they are frightened of it. Why? Usually because they have little experience of writing about drama. Unlike other subject areas such as English where pupils will have had weekly writing practice since primary school...
Essential preparation for drama school auditions
Getting into drama school is very competitive and can be an emotionally draining experience. Literally thousands of "hopefuls" audition for drama schools every year, so here's some essential tips to ensure you get the very best out of each audition. Some questions you may need to ask yourself. Have you researched the drama schools that...
The "A" grade is in the detail
My advice to all students is to "paint a very clear visual picture". For example if you are reviewing a play explain exactly what happened on stage in order to make you "laugh" "cry" "think" "make cultural connections" and so on. It is not good enough to write "the actor was very effective". You must explain what he/she did and the effect...

Mrs Harris taught me for three years and I gained confidence with performing and in my essay writing skills. In my GCSE I was able to achieve a higher grade than I thought I could. I had not written drama essays before Mrs Harris' lessons but now I am very confident. It also helped my English essays which I was struggling with. Mrs Harris' passion for drama inspired me to carry it on for A Level. - Yasmin Bhandal, (16) year 12 student, Marist Senior School |

If it wasn't for mrs harris' help and guidance particularly through the writing part of my drama GCSE, there is absolutely no way that I would have gained the grade that I did. She broke it down into chunks that made it alot easier to understand what the question was asking, and what the examiner wanted to see in the answer when marking it. It was really astounding to see how the grades of my practice essays went up over the period that we were preparing for the exam. - Hattie Hughes (15) GCSE student, Berkshire |

Every drama lesson was extremely enjoyable; whether it was practical or written. Mrs Harris’ teaching allowed me to understand the plays I was studying in great depth and she taught me to use this knowledge to write the best essays that I possibly could. In my opinion she is a fantastic teacher and without her help I would not have achieved the A grade that I did for my A level Theatre Studies - Emma Hall, (18) first year university student studying Psychology |
