- I am a professional teacher who has been teaching for many years in South West London and am author of the book The Art of Practising the Piano (Stainer and Bell, 1993).
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach piano and theory to Grade 8 level and clarinet and flute to Grade 5 level.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a BA degree and Masters degree in Music. I also hold an LTCL diploma in piano teaching and LRSM diploma in clarinet teaching.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians since about 1986 and have taught children and adults privately at all levels since then. I have lectured on the subject of practising, composed educational music, including An Alphabet of Piano Pieces, and have examined for The Guildhall School of Music. I am author of the book The Art of Practising the Piano published by Stainer and Bell (1993) which is still one of the most extensive works on the subject. I also run an organisation called EduStage which was set up to teach young people the skills involved in musical theatre. (See My Media where there are examples taken from musicals I wrote for my summer schools: for children at Sutton and teenagers at Nottingham.)
- How much do you charge?
- I charge 16.00 per half hour and 32.00 per hour arranged in series of 10 lessons but will offer a free introductory lesson without any obligation to continue. Please also enquire about sibling discounts.
- Where do you teach?
- I teach from home, close to Balham mainline (10 minutes from Victoria) and underground stations (Northern line) in SW London. Balham is situated close to Tooting and Clapham in Wandsworth.
- When are you available?
- I am available weekday afternoons and early evening.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach children from the age of 7 upwards from beginners to advanced (Piano) or beginners to intermediate (Clarinet and Flute). I also teach adults who have availability to come for lessons during the day or early evening.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- ABRSM Prep test and Grades 1 to 8
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I have been CRB checked and have evidence to show this.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- Incorporated Sociey of Musicians
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- My current students range from complete beginners to advanced post Grade 8. They are either learning for pleasure or working towards a Grade exam. One of my previous students is currently reading music at Cambridge University and another is studying for a Masters degree at the Royal Academy of Music.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- I enjoy teaching beginners so that I can start them off in a way that they will develop a love of music and not acquire bad habits that have to be changed later. Whatever level I am teaching at I aim to make lessons enjoyable, valuable and fun.
