Personal Message

I am a dedicated teacher and performer looking for innovative new ideas to learn and share with beginners to those hoping to gain higher qualifications. Students will discover confidence-boosting techniques, performance and technical tips and experience enjoyable and encouraging lessons.

As a successful chamber musician (the Absolution Saxophone Quartet) I strongly believe that group music making not only improves student development, but also increases enjoyment. I therefore offer group chamber tuition for students.

Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
Saxophone
Flute
Clarinet
Chamber Music
Music Theory

Tell me about your qualifications.
BMus (Hons) – RNCM (saxophone)
DipABRSM (flute)
ABRSM Grade 8 (clarinet)

What kind of experience do you have?
I have over four years teaching experience. I am currently a woodwind tutor at ‘The Music Place’ in Altrincham and Macclesfield Music Centre and have also taught in senior schools throughout the North West, as well as continued private tuition. In addition to teaching, I regularly perform throughout the UK as a soloist and chamber musician and use this experience to help students overcome difficulties and experience more enjoyment when performing.

Please look through my uploaded documents which includes my CV and details my full teaching experience.

How much do you charge?
£24 per hr.
£12 per hr trial lesson or for a half hr lesson.
Discounts can be arranged for group tuition.

Where do you teach?
I teach at my home in Ardwick. It is on the main bus route from Piccadilly Station and Manchester town centre to Stockport, it is also a 7 minute walk from Oxford Road. Car Parking is also available.

When are you available?
As a freelance musician I am fairly flexible. I teach mainly on Saturdays with my privately run music school 'Saturday Saxophones' but also throughout the week apart from Monday afternoon or evenings.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
I currently teach pupils of all ages and abilities. I believe that age is not relevant and is no obstacle to study (many enjoy success in their retirement).

Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare students for ABRSM exams and lessons include aural and theory studies, as well as practical advice.

Having studied at a music college I also prepare advanced saxophone students for auditions, including those for music college entrance..

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes.

Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I am willing to conduct a series of email tutorials with students, especially for more advanced students who have specific problems which need addressing. However, I wouldn't recomemend this to complete beginners as it is easy to pick up bad habits without the help of regular live tutoring.

Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a performing musician with ‘Live Music Now!’ and regularly work with children of all ages, including those with learning difficulties, and the elderly.

Where and with whom did you train?
The Royal Northern College of Music, 2006-2010.
I have studied with some of the UK’s finest musicians.
Saxophone: Rob Buckland, Andy Scott and Julian Arguelles.
Flute: Nicholas Vallis-Davies Ph.D
I have also received coaching from European artists such as Vincent David and the Habanera Saxophone Quartet.

Do you have a personal message for students?
Studying an instrument is challenging, but also a hugely rewarding pursuit and one of my top priorities is that lessons are enjoyable, focusing on playing the saxophone, flute or clarinet and pursuing the art of performance in a positive way whatever your level.

The Benifits of Ensemble Playing

Many people spend many hours taking instrumental lessons and then more time on their personal practice between lessons. Instrumental lessons are extremely important to a pupil’s development and tutors provide essential guidance but I believe it is equally important is to get involved in...

The Importance of Good Posture

As a sufferer of lower back pain I strongly believe in the importance of good posture when playing the saxophone and any other instrument. Take playing the saxophone as an example, it is an extremely unnatural thing for a person to do, our bodies are not designed to hang heavy pieces of metal...
