About Joanna
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have tutored students of all levels, from Primary through to A Level. In particular I have experience of working with children who struggle with fundamental English skills such as reading comprehension and vocabulary and with individuals for whom English is not a first language. I also currently work as an Education Assistant at the Chatham Dockyard where I help to deliver a range of learning sessions. I have completed work experience in local secondary schools, where I have led classes at Key Stage Three and GCSE level. I also have gained work experience as a primary classroom assistant and at university I helped to organise creative writing workshops for very young children. Over the last few years I have provided tutoring in many contexts, for example proof-reading work for university students and offering comments and suggestions on their essay-writing technique. I also tutored my younger brother through his English Language and English Literature GCSEs.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes, I hold an enhanced CRB disclosure certificate.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I am currently tutoring students at both A Level and GCSE, providing assistance with essay writing and literary analysis, as well as more basic reading comprehension skills. The students are at different levels and whilst some require help just to strengthen up their written work and add more depth to their answers, others require a back to basics approach to ensure that they understand the texts they are required to study. I am also currently tutoring a pupil at Primary level, helping her to develop her basic reading and writing skills. Each of my students has a carefully planned scheme of work which takes into account their own individual needs and monitors their progress through a variety of assessments. My tuition service has received very positive feedback from students, who have commented upon the strength of my commitment to the tutoring process and my original approach to teaching language and literature.

I offer a warm and friendly tuition service in English Language and Literature that is designed to help the student achieve their full potential. I am an English Literature graduate with experience in providing one-on-one tuition at a variety of levels. I believe that English is a subject in which everybody has the ability to do well and a subject with which everyone can engage and it is this attitude that drives my approach to teaching. If you are struggling with your English studies and would like additional support then I would be more than happy to hear from you.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach English Literature and English Language. I can also offer support with technical areas such as handwriting, essay writing and proof-reading. Anyone seeking general help with reading and writing skills is more than welcome.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have an MA (Merit) and a BA (Hons, 2.1) from the University of Warwick. I also have the following A Levels: English Literature (A), French (A), History (A), Spanish (A) and General Studies (A).
- How much do you charge?
I charge £20 per hour for lessons from Primary level through to GCSE, and £25 an hour for A Level and Degree sessions. I am also happy to tutor students in groups of 2 - 5 at £15 per student for lessons up to GCSE and £20 per student for A Level and Degree. For lessons at the pupil's home there will be an additional charge in order to cover my bus fare/petrol costs. After the first session I ask for one lesson's payment in advance as a deposit. If a lesson is cancelled with less than 24 hours notice then the deposit will be forfeited unless there are exceptional circumstances.
- Where do you teach?
I teach both at my own home in Lordswood (Kent) and at the student's home, providing it is within a 5 mile radius. This includes homes in Lordswood, Walderslade, Boxley, Blue Bell Hill, Luton, Chatham, Rochester, Hempstead, Gillingham, Wigmore, Rainham and Strood. I generally only travel to the student's home after 7pm and I only have a limited number of spaces for pupils who require this service. Please note these spaces are currently filling up fast.
- When are you available?
I am available for tuition on weekdays after 4pm and at weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach at Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3, GCSE, A Level and Degree. I am willing to take pupils of any age, including mature students.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I offer a friendly and supportive approach to tuition. As a young tutor I can remember for myself what the demands of examinations and coursework were like and thus I can connect with students on their own level. I like to encourage people to see English as a subject that provides skills that are essential to the workplace and university studies, but also as a great source of personal development. Clearly I want to see students achieve the highest results they possibly can, but I also take great pleasure from watching others make a connection with the material, and learn about the happiness that can come from reading great literature.
Recommendations

Friendly and definitely worth while. Very good at finding the originality needed to get top grades. I would also like to add that my English grades dramatically improved after a few sessions of tutoring.
The tremendous amount of effort and enthusiasm that was put into every lesson with Jo helped to build my confidence and broaden my outlook on all the texts. Jo also went to the effort of researching all my texts in depth and finding multiple resources for us to analyse and see how these points could be incorporated into essays. I owe many thanks to Jo for the time and effort she gave me during those daunting months, and for having great faith in my ability to study English Literature.
