Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Key Stage 3 English, GCSE English, A-level English, Creative Writing (all levels) and English Literature (all levels). I also teach English as a second language.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I hold a 2:1 BA (hons) in English and Creative Studies - a degree combining English Literature and Creative Writing. In addition to this I hold a MA in Creative Writing (some of my work has been published in on-line magazines). I am a qualified teacher with a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education - this means I specialise in teaching the 14-19 and adult age bracket, but I also have experience of teaching younger people.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught in various colleges and language schools. I also have previously worked in a primary school as a volunteer. I have a proven track record of improving students' grades.
How much do you charge?
My fees are as listed above, however I will offer a discount for group lessons and for the initial consultation session. Please contact me directly to discuss. I use public transport so may charge extra if I find your location particularly difficult to get to. Again, please contact me directly to discuss.
Where do you teach?
I prefer to teach at students' homes or at a location like a library. A mutually convenient cafe may also be appropriate for certain subjects/services. I am near Portsmouth & Southsea station and major bus routes so can travel outside of Portsmouth, however I may charge extra if it is a long journey.
When are you available?
Presently I am available most days, at most times.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach mainly 14-19 and adults, but do have experience of teaching younger children. I teach at all levels from English basic skills right up to A-level and University level English.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I hold an in-date CRB certificate so am cleared to work with children and vunerable adults.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Please contact me to discuss arrangements for on-line tutoring. I can do this in a number of ways but need to discuss the students' needs before deciding on the most appropriate method.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Institute for Learning.
Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at the University of Portsmouth.
Tell me about some of your current students.
I recently finished teaching a group of Italian students who had come over for the summer to improve their English skills. We had a lot of fun combining activities like creative writing, discussion, presentation work and drama to improve their spoken English.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I am a warm and friendly teacher who strives to get the best out of her students. I like teaching using a wide range of activites and will tailor my lesson materials to meet your individual needs.
Creative Writing is not about Divine Inspiration
Good writing does not come from divine inspiration: it is in fact a lot of hard work. Like many other artistic skills – playing a musical instrument, painting – it requires practice to improve your creative writing. There are many ways to do this; some of my suggestions are listed...
