- I offer flute lessons for all ages and levels of aspiring flute players.
Whether you are a complete beginner or an advanced player, my aim is to give helpful, practical and positive tuition.
I have over 25 years experience as a flute teacher as well as a wealth of high level experience as a performer with many of Britain's most prestigious orchestras and ensembles. - Which subject(s) do you teach?
- Flute (including Alto Flute and Piccolo), Piano, Composition and Theory.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- A.R.C.M., G.R.S.M., MusM. PhD
- What kind of experience do you have?
- As a performer, I spent the major part of my career as Assistant Principal Flute in the Hallé Orchestra (1980-2001). Since leaving the orchestra to freelance and to pursue composition studies at Manchester University, I have worked on a freelance basis with many orchestras and freelance ensembles. As a chamber musician I have given recitals throughout England and Wales with Free Trade Winds wind quintet and more recently with my Flute, Viola and Harp trio, Trio Fauve.
Throughout my professional career I have maintained a very active interest in flute teaching, firstly with my private teaching practice, tutoring all age ranges from 7 years to adults, a number of my pupils having gained places as undergraduates and postgraduates at major music colleges such as the R.N.C.M., Birmingham Conservatoire and Trinity College. I have also spent periods teaching at schools in the Greater Manchester area as well as at Salford University (1983-1990). Since Sept. 2002, I have tutored part-time at Manchester University in composition and orchestration, taught the flute as well as coaching and directing chamber music groups and composition workshops. I am also a part-time flute tutor for Cheshire Music Education Partnership at Malbank School and Sixth Form College, Nantwich and teach the flute at MMU’s Alsager campus. In addition, I have been involved in coaching Lancashire Schools Symphony Orchestra woodwind section on an occasional basis. - How much do you charge?
- For advanced Flute pupils I charge £30.00/hour but will negotiate a rate with students and I also teach for shorter time periods - 45 and 30 mins. with rates charged pro rata Other subjects attract a slightly lower fee:- Theory/Compostion £25.00/hour and Piano £20.00/hour
