- Personal Message
- Friendly teacher in North London offers tailor made private tuition in clarinet and saxophone to people of all ages.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I am a classical clarinet teacher, and I also teach saxophone (soprano and alto).
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I studied for four years at Trinity College of Music, where I gained my Licentiate of Trinity College of Music, London (L.T.C.L) professional teaching diploma.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I am an experienced private teacher and performer. I have been teaching for 20 years and the age range I teach is currently from 14 - 78! I like to cater for my students needs and tastes in music, ranging from classical to lighter music, and have a friendly and positive attitude to my students. I teach all levels from beginners to post grade 8. I have a lot of performing experience, including playing occasionally with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Fulham Symphony Orchestra (where I am principal clarinet), and have performed as a soloist in Britain and in various places in Europe, including Denmark, France and Austria. I am also a member of a saxophone quartet.
- How much do you charge?
- My fees are as follows: 1 hour £30, 45 mins £25 and 30 mins £20
- Where do you teach?
- Because of time restrictions, I teach only from home. I operate an open diary system so that a mutually agreed time is arranged for the next lesson. Areas close to where I live, which is Harringay, are Islington, Finchley, Muswell Hill, Holloway, Hampstead, Wood Green, Tottenham, Camden Town, Highbury, Crouch End, Angel and Finsbury Park.
- When are you available?
- Generally from Tuesday to Friday evenings from 6pm onwards, with the last lesson finishing at 8 - 8.30pm, the occasional weekend lesson is possible in exceptional circumstances (eg exam etc).
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach from 12 years old right through to OAP level.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- No
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I belong to the Fulham Symphony Orchestra and London Shostakovich Orchestra
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I trained with Peter Howes, who himself was trained by Reginald Kell.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Please give me a call and we can discuss teaching options for you. Please be careful when looking for a teacher, you must ensure that they have studied at one of the main music Conservatories in the country, such as the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Trinity College of Music or Guildhall School of music (these are the London Conservatories). BEWARE OF TEACHERS WHO ONLY HAVE GRADE 8 LISTED AS QUALIFICATIONS, AND CLAIM TO BE PROFESSIONAL TEACHERS - THEY ARE NOT!

Right Hand Down Technique
A hugely important part of basic clarinet technique often gets overlooked by even the most of experienced teachers. This is the technique of keeping the right hand down whilst going up and down over the ‘break’ on the clarinet. The ‘break’ causes many students a great deal of worry and is easily solvable by the use of this cornerstone...
