- Personal Message
- My name is Joshua Batty and I am studying at the Royal Academy of Music,London.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach flute and piccolo, piano and French speaking, writing reading and listening up to GCSE standard.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I am post grade 8 /diploma standard on flute and have attained grade 8 flute with distinction and am currently undergoing a performance degree at the Royal Academy (BMus) on full scholarship. I have grade A* in GCSE French and A at A level French.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I was a student at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester for 6 years where I was fortunate to gain diverse experiences such as appearing as principal flute/ 2nd flute and piccolo as well as a concerto soloist in Manchester's Bridgewater Hall with the Chetham's Symphony Orchestra. I was also trained for 6 years in becoming a chamber musician in ensembles such as flute and strings, wind quintets, dectets, trios and more frequently - flute and piano. With these chamber groups we did numerous recitals and many educational workshops at primary schools and performed in music therapy programmes in hospices and hospitals. I was also principal 2nd flute (2009) and principal flute (2010) of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain where i was fortunate to play under great conductors at incredible concert venues across the UK. I am currently playing principal flute in the University of London Symphony Orchestra and also a member of the Venti Quintet. At Chethams we were incredibly fortunate to be taught piano so I would be able to demonstrate on piano and accompany in lessons if a piano were available. I have taught flute in primary schools to large groups of children as well as to individuals as one on one lessons.
For languages I have studied french for 8 years and attained an A* at GCSE and an A at A level. Alongside music, my other passion is the french language and I hope to reside in France and study/perform there in future. - How much do you charge?
- I charge £30/ hour on flute and piccolo or £15/ half hour and I am very prepared to travel but at a potential extra cost to cover expenses. Consultation lessons will be £25 for an hour. For group sessions i charge £35/hour.
- Where do you teach?
- I am able to teach in and around Westminster and am prepared to travel outside (across London) with a small extra cost to cover travel. My closest tube station is Kings Cross
- When are you available?
- I am flexible throughout the week and weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- On flute/piano/piccolo I am happy to teach complete beginners to advanced amateurs (grade 8/diploma)
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I would prepare my students for whatever qualifications they desire but I believe the ABRSM graded system to be a very good place to start.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I do not currently have a CRB.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I studied at Chetham's School of music with Gitte Marcusson, Richard Davis and Katherine Baker and Linda Verrier and am currently studying with Michael Cox and Kate Hill on flute and Patricia Morris on piccolo at the Royal Academy of Music. I also trained on 6 National Youth Orchestra courses with Sarah Newbold Andrew Nicholson and Laura Jellicoe.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- I am a keen and passionate musician and teacher who really looks forward to hearing players of all ages and bringing the best out of my pupils.

My Testimonials

I have to say, he is young, but he is good! Both in terms of playing and teaching. He replied promptly when I first tried to reach him through the tutor page. Even at that time he was playing in a competition in Romania, he asked an old friend of his to take care of my queries. What I like most about his teaching is that he would be brutally honest about my achievements, which is a very responsible way of teaching... - Siyang Tang |
