Personal Message
I am a mature, qualified and experienced IELTS examiner (Speaking) and teacher. I also have many years experience in teaching EAP (English for Academic Purposes), and preparing students for the Cambridge business and general English exams.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
IELTS (I am a certified Examiner), EAP, Cambridge Proficiency, Advanced and First Certificate, Cambridge BEC (Preliminary, Vantage & Higher), general English as a Foreign Language. Besides teaching overseas students, I have also prepared many native English speakers who needed a high score in IELTS as part of their visa requirements for emigration to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and other countries. I am also fluent in Spanish and can teach Spanish conversation and grammar using the same teaching methods as in my English teaching.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I graduated from London University in 1970 with a B.A. (Hons) in French and English. In 2004 I gained my CELTA from International House in London and became a full-time English teacher, specialising since then in IELTS and Academic English. I qualified as a Cambridge IELTS examiner in 2009, and examine the Speaking module regularly at a test centre in London.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have recently retired from full-time teaching, and have now taken up tutoring, specialising in IELTS and Cambridge ESOL exam preparation. Since 2009 I have examined IELTS candidates in their Speaking Tests at a test centre in London, and have just completed my 2-year re-certification as an examiner. It is impossible to guarantee that students will reach a desired IELTS score, as so much depends not only on their English skills, but also on their intellectual and academic ability, and their willingness to study at home. I can however accurately forecast a student's probable score after the first week's tuition, and help them to focus on their particular strengths and weaknesses.
How much do you charge?
I offer new students a free half-hour face-to-face consultation, to assess their needs and abilities. Once we have met, I can recommend the number of hours he/she should undertake; however, the general rule is 6 hours per week for one or two months (24 or 48 hours), although this can vary depending on their initial level and their willingness to self-study in their own time. IELTS classes are £40 per hour, minimum 2 hours (£80). Other classes range from £25 to £35 per hour. Classes should be paid weekly in advance at the full rate. Blocks of hours can be booked and paid for in advance, at reduced price - please ask me for details.
Where do you teach?
I prefer to teach at my home, although I am willing to travel to students' homes as long as they are within a short car or Tube journey from London SW15.
When are you available?
I am flexible on days and times, as this is agreed individually with each student.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
Over 18s, all levels.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
IELTS, Cambridge Proficiency, Advanced and First Certificate.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
No, not needed for teaching adults.
Where and with whom did you train?
International House, London
Cambridge IELTS/British Council
