- Personal Message
- If you are looking for an exceptionally well qualified tutor who has an ability to establish a rapport quickly and who will enable you to reach your full potential, then contact me.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- Sociology is my main subject but I am experienced and qualified to teach Government and Politics too. My 1st year students take Family, Education and Methods and my second years take Beliefs in Society (Religion), Crime & Deviance & Methods. However, I also teach American politics, British Politics & Comparative Politics, something I studied as a post-graduate and research student. I have also been supporting more University students in subjects such as International Relations, Cultural Studies, Social Studies and other areas related to the social and political sciences.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- BA (Hons) Government 2.1, M.Sc (Lond.) Politics and Administration, Doctor of Philosophy, American Politics, PGCE in further and higher education, CMI Executive Diploma in Management level 7, Diploma in Leadership.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have 17 years teaching experience and currently Head a Sociology department in a College with Beacon status in the North West. I tutor private clients at the moment and have done so for several years. I am a highly experienced online tutor with excellent feedback from a large number of former students and their parents. I write for Nelson Thornes who are publishers on 'A' level Sociology and I am an examiner for Theory and Methodology, Sociology of the Family and the Sociology of Education. As far as my politics students are concerned, I teach units 1 and 2 at AS level and have been supporting quite a number of those taking the A2 Ideologies paper. I use a variety of teaching methods and resources and I'm always willing to read up on areas I might not be familiar with in order to give value for money and a quality learning experience.
- How much do you charge?
- I charge £28 per hour but all my students take advantage of discounted rates available on my website for block bookings. The more hours purchased the lower the hourly rate. 5 hour and 10 hour blocks can be bought via paypal 'buy it now buttons.' My time can be used for traditional teaching, via Skype video calls, for detailed feedback on essays, dissertations or to improve your UCAS personal statement. I also help University students with very challenging Journal Articles by making the language and the ideas more accessible.
- Where do you teach?
- I can teach at home in Crewe or I may be able to travel to a students home. Most of my teaching is done online via Skype and students just send a contact invite to marburyeducation; I accept the contact, then we're up and running. This method is really useful because you can avoid the travelling and easily access mark schemes, past papers, internet sources and other media.
- When are you available?
- Most evenings, every weekend and Tuesday in the day.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I primarily teach 16-18 year-olds but I also teach University students too. I also support a number of undergraduates with their summative essays and help in the editing process to support them with their dissertations. Recent undergraduate work I have been involved with has been the Underclass, Social Exclusion and Howard Garfinkl's ethnomethodology, Youth Policy and Attachment (yes, a bit of Psychology).
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- AS, A2, Undergraduate and Masters Degree.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I use Skype and have a a PC that uses logitech Webcam for video calls. I tutor online during the evenings and weekends and significantly discount my hourly rate for this service. Students have found that discussing their essays online has been very helpful and saves them time too! I can research your specific topic beforehand and this really makes the best use of our time online.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- Examiner SCLY2, SCLY3 Chartered Management Institute PSA American Politics Group Institute for Learning

In recent weeks, I have been supporting a student taking the second year of her Sociology degree.
- Do you have a personal message for students?

Crime: Looking for Solutions
Crime: Looking for Solutions Critics argue that have too much crime, a burgeoning prison population and a level of disorder on our streets that is completely unacceptable. Criminality is damaging to society in a material sense, as well as in a social sense. Our property may be stolen or damaged and we can feel vulnerable in our communities and...
College Education: For the many or the few?
Should College education be available to the many or reserved for the few? Although many will have opinions about the question, views are often informed by notions of elitism or egalitarianism. One of these mutually exclusivist orthodoxies opines that competitive entry, exceptional or at least high ability, is a prerequisite to qualify for a...
How Society Influences Behaviour
Theories about how society influences behavior In Sociology, the traditional orthodoxy has been to polarise this debate by saying that our behaviour is either determined by structures, or that our consciousness means that we have agency, or self-determination. So we are either puppets of social forces like education: mass media and religion,...
Sociological Perspectives on Education
In the mid-nineteenth century the founding fathers of Sociology like Marx, Comte and Durkheim, sought to achieve their political objectives by using scientific methods. They wanted to convince others about the validity or desirability of their views and the most effective way to achieve that was to employ the tried and tested research methods...

The sessions have helped my learning greatly, the one on one nature of them means I get a deeper understanding of the subject area and any queries I have about it can be directly answered and explained The nature of the tutoring is also excellent; being tailored to the way I personally learn best to make sure I get optimum learning from them, I would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to enhance their learning as they have been an invaluable aid to my exam preparation. - Jessica Loukaides |

I find these lessons really useful! Writing out essays after having read through lots of material and having someone to critically go through your essay as well as adding essay plans etc is really invaluable when it comes to learning things for the exams. I also wouldn't have been able to do it alone, and definitely required help from a tutor to help me progress - Asira Siraj |

I studied A level sociology on a part-time basis, and found the help I received to be invaluable. My tutor was insightful, very approachable and dedicated to helping me achieve my goals. I was particularly surprised by the depth at which we were able to cover the syllabus online. From my experience, I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Marbury education - Naomi Muggleton |

I hadn’t used online tutoring before and was unsure as to whether I would like it. After a few weeks I began to enjoy the subject as Julian’s enthusiasm and love of Sociology rubbed off on me. Julian was very flexible and managed to fit in extra slots when required, he was excellent at marking my work and giving me constructive criticism which helped to raise the standard of my written work. I achieved high A’s in both A2 units all thanks to him. - Rhianne Neil |

Julian provided excellent long distance training which helped my daughter achieve an ‘A’ grade in Sociology and be accepted to her first choice University. I would strongly recommend him to anyone sitting ‘A’ level Sociology. - Robert Eastham |
|
Overall, my son went from being a low E grade student to a high D in his A Level overall (very nearly a C). Bearing in mind that my son's AS results (two Es) were already a fait accompli when Julian took him on, and that A2s are generally harder than AS, this was a great outcome and provided enough extra UCAS to get him into his 1st choice Universirt. I cannot recommend Julian highly enough as a tutor, you will not be disappointed. - Susan Boyd |

I'm leaving feedback from a parent’s perspective. Coming to online tuition for the first time I had my concerns, however I can say that Julian provides absolutely first class tutoring. He is proactive, well organized, and lesson content is backed up by extensive teaching materials for the student. Work is set and returned promptly with detailed indication of where and how to improve. He manages to easily establish a relationship with the student that is both encouraging but accountable. - Elizabeth Yeadon |
