About Katy
- What kind of experience do you have?
I teach at Ibstock Place School in Roehampton and at Bedales school in Hampshire where I have been for 8 years. I teach privately from home. I teach every year on the Oxford Cello School which is an international Summer course held at Radley College. Here I take masterclasses and coach individuals and chamber ensembles. I also coach the cello section of the Ealing Youth Orchestra as and when required. I have been teaching for over 12 years.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a recent CRB certificate- in fact I have two!
- Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London for 5 years with Josephine Knight and David Strange.I also studied in the Hochschule for Music in Leipzig with Christian Giger. Before that, I was raised in Wales where I studied with Sharon McKinley and Keith Hewitt from the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I have a lovely student who recently retired and decided that he would start the cello as he has always wanted to have lessons but could never quite find the time whilst he was a busy professional. He has lessons every week and has made fantastic progress in just over a year. He is playing Grade 5 and 6 repertoire and is coming to study with me on the Oxford Cello School this Summer.
I teach two young sisters who help each other practise. They started at the same time and are now both doing their grade 5 together. They encourage each other and the cello has become a fun and rewarding activity for them to share!
I also have another adult student who played the cello as a child and decided that he would like to start lessons again. He has made considerable progress and has even changed jobs and now works for a major London Symphony Orchestra. He is playing grade 8 repertoire and I am confident that he will be able to do some professional work in the future.
