Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I am a Trombone teacher with experience in a large range of styles including classical, jazz and world music. Although my first instrument is the trombone, I have experience teaching all brass instruments.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have received an Artists Certificate from the Cleveland Institute of Music, Ohio. This is a performance based qualification which resulted from nearly two years of study in America.
Also, I have a Bachelor in Music qualification with honours from the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. This course focused on achieving a high level of performance, but it also gives a large amount of instruction in the art of teaching.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have experience teaching brass musicians of all ages and abilities. I have also taught group lessons and educational workshops.
How much do you charge?
I charge £22 for a one hour lesson and £11 for a half hour lesson. I also offer a free consultation lesson.
Where do you teach?
I teach at my house in Withington, South Manchester. I would also be willing to travel to a students home if this is more convenient. I can travel around Manchester and the north of Cheshire, however there will be a small extra charge.
When are you available?
I have a flexible schedule and would prefer not to have a fixed time every week. However, if it is more convenient, a fixed time can be arranged.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I have experience teaching all age ranges.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes
Where and with whom did you train?
I began my training at the Junior Guildhall music school in London and then moved to Manchester to study full time at the Royal Northern College of Music. I interrupted my studies at the RNCM to spend an extended period studying at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Ohio, USA. During my studies, I have been taught by trombonists from the Liverpool Philharmonic, the Orchestra of Opera North, the BBC Philharmonic, the Halle, the Cleveland Orchestra and the LA Philharmonic.
Mental Approach to Practice
There is a common cliché when people talk about practise – ‘it’s the quality that’s important, not the quantity’, but how can you go about achieving a high quality of practice? I believe that the style of practice that you employ should not be the same every time you enter the practice room and...
My First Years Playing the Trombone
I started playing the trombone when my father went up into the loft and brought down an old trumpet and an old trombone which he used to play himself. I immediately saw the trumpet and made a dash for it, but my sister got there first so I was stuck with the trombone. Although at the time I was...
