Personal Message
Top-quality academic and instrumental tuition from Cambridge graduate, postgraduate at Royal College of Music.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
Philosophy, Piano, Essay Writing and Exam Skills, Proof Reading
Tell me about your qualifications.
My academic background: I studied Philosophy at the University of Cambridge, where I was awarded the Craig Taylor Prize for the best exam results in my year. I then spent a year at Harvard as a Frank Knox Fellow, followed by a year at the University of London (Birkbeck College). My musical background: A graduate of Aberdeen City Music School, I have extensive experience as a soloist, chamber musician, accompanist and teacher, and am now studying for a Masters in Performance at the Royal College of Music. Qualifications: BA in Philosophy, University of Cambridge (2009) DipABRSM in Piano Performance (2004) School qualifications include As in Advanced Higher Maths, English and Music, and Higher History.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have experience tutoring all ages and levels, and can tailor lessons to suit each individual student. I am currently employed by Birkbeck College (University of London) to teach their undergraduate Political Philosophy, Ethics, and Epistmology courses. I also work for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, writing hints and strategies for teaching the new practical musicianship syllabus.
How much do you charge?
My standard rate is £30 per hour, plus travel expenses outside central London. I believe that education should be open to everyone, so my listed prices are negotiable depending on financial circumstances. If you are unsure whether you can afford my standard rate, please do get in touch anyway and I'm sure we can sort something out!
Where do you teach?
I teach in Bloomsbury (near Russell Square and Goodge Street) several weekday evenings, in Vauxhall on Saturdays, and in South Kensington on Sundays. For piano teaching I travel to students' homes around central London.
When are you available?
I tutor weekday evenings and weekends.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
Philosophy, essay writing, proof-reading: up to and including degree level. Piano: all ages and levels welcome, including adult learners!
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Academic: I can prepare students for A-levels and equivalent qualifications, as well as for university entrance and other university exams. Piano: I can prepare students for ABRSM grade exams and diplomas, but this only suits some students and I don't believe exams are a necessary part of musical development.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
No.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
For A-level and above I can offer academic tutoring by email.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM), University and College Union (UCU)
Where and with whom did you train?
Aberdeen City Music School (2000-06) University of Cambridge (2006-09) Harvard University (2009-10) Birkbeck College, University of London (2010-11) Royal College of Music (2011- ), taught by Niel Immelman FRCM (2006- )
Tell me about some of your current students.
I have several A-level and university level philosophy students, as well as my undergraduate classes at Birkbeck.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Everyone has the potential to think creatively, to write brilliant essays, and to love their subject; the job of the tutor is to bring out that potential. Having experienced the system of one-to-one supervisions at Cambridge, I know that nothing makes for faster progress than regularly discussing your work in depth in a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment. As a tutor, my aim is always to make the subject comprehensible and engaging while challenging students to think for themselves. Music teaching is about helping students to develop their own musical imagination, and there's no 'one size fits all' approach to achieving this. I'm convinced that everyone has the potential to be a musician - some people just haven't discovered it yet!
