- Personal Message
- I have had many lovely compliments from my students, including “very unexpected”, but for the most part they have described me as warm, caring and fun.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach English (Language and Literature) KS3, GCSE, ICSE and A-Level, Classical Civilisation KS3, GCSE and A-Level, Latin to GCSE, and Drama and Creative Writing at all levels.
I also critique essays online, offering marking and suggestions (NOT rewriting it for you), and offer a professional proofreading and editing service for writers. Go to my website (listed above) to find information on my Publishing Services, especially for those interested in self-publishing to print and eBook. - Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a 2:1 BA Hons (Dunelm) in English Studies from the University of Durham, which covered a range of genres such as Victorian, American and Children’s Literature, Ancient languages, and Classical Literature. I also have a PGCE in Secondary English teaching from the Westminster Institute at Oxford Brookes. In between degrees I worked as a bookseller for two of the largest Academic booksellers in the UK; Waterstones in Bloomsbury (Gower Street) and Blackwell in Oxford (Broad Street), for which I also ran the bookclub/reading group and organised the children’s storyteller, encouraging all ages to enjoy reading.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have taught for six years at both state and private schools, most recently at an Inner London Comprehensive. In that time I have also tutored GCSE and A-Level students, and run extra-curricular clubs in Drama and Creative Writing, students of which wrote and staged their own plays and musicals, scripted and filmed a feature-length film, and took a successful sketch show to the Edinburgh Fringe. I teach between 4 - 6 private students a week, work for Local Authority LSA departments on an ad hoc basis, and also teach distance learners online and via email for the IGCSE through an Oxford-based organisation.
I also proofread for educational publishers and write course content; I have recently been working on a course for the IGCSE English Literature.
Privately, I am developing a resources website (listed above) on which you can find free resources, including my most successful tutoring resources, as well as specialised GCSE help, and I have just added resources for studying/revising this year's CIE IGCSE Literature poetry. My book 'Writing Essays: what you need to know', a colourful manual developed with my tutees especially for independent learners, is now available through my website and on Amazon. - How much do you charge?
- My fees are as listed above, although I offer a discount for group lessons.
I use public transport and am based near Ealing Broadway buses and tube stops. I can travel to you quickly on the Central or District between zones 2 – 4, and along the 207, E1 and E3 routes, so may need to charge extra if I find your location takes longer to get to. Please contact me directly to discuss.
For Proofreading/Editing and Publishing services, you can also go to my website (listed above) to see the packages on offer. - Where do you teach?
- I teach at students' homes or a location like a public library. Please contact me if you have an idea for a suitable or mutually convenient location. I am based in and around Ealing, Northfields and Boston Manor, Hanwell, Acton, and Greenford.
Alternatively, I have had great successes teaching for short stints online, or helping students by offering direct advice on their written work. Contact me if you think that this could help you. - When are you available?
- *I AM UNFORTUNATELY NOW FULL FOR EASTER REVISION SESSIONS*
Please see below for details of my *essay-writing guidebook* which may be of use to you!
I am currently working three days a week teaching Classics in Hampshire, and am full with regular students on Mondays and Fridays. I can however offer short-term tutoring for students for one or two-off sessions during the school half term and termly breaks, or proofreading/editing/criticisms of written work. For essays, I will not rewrite your schoolwork for you - that's cheating - but I will provide detailed advice and criticism of creative and analytical pieces.
(If you are interested in publishing eBooks, please go to the publishing section of my website.)
I also have a book out - 'Writing Essays: what you need to know' - available through my website!
*Recently some contact emails have gone to my 'Junk' folder! I now check it regularly so do please be persistent and I will respond!* - Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I mostly teach secondary-age children, from 11 – 18. However, I have worked with older students, and adult clients on creative writing and proofreading projects, such as manuscript drafts for publication. Please discuss your needs with me to see whether I will be a suitable tutor for you.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I have Enhanced CRB certificates from my previous and current employment.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- Please contact me to discuss arrangements for on-line tutoring. This can be approached in a number of ways, such as by using MSN, Skype, Blueteach, or by emailing documents, but needs to be discussed before deciding on the most appropriate method for the student’s needs. These methods are available at a reduced rate.
Alternatively, you can use my interactive resources website (listed above), and sign up for free access to my most successful resources. - Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I tutor online with Wolsey Hall Oxford Distance Learning, who are a distinguished Distance Learning and Home Schooling provider of IGCSEs and other courses. If you are looking for advice or help with learning a new subject as a mature student, or home schooling your pupil rather than having regular tutoring additional to school, supported distance learning may be a good route for you.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Most of my students go up two whole NC levels (eg: from a 4 to a 6) at KS3, or two whole grades at GCSE and A-Level - my most recent AS student went from a C to an A in his retake, scoring 106/120. If we can't find time for an appointment, go to my website for access to the same resources I used with them! It only takes a little specific help and application to get BIG results!

Pathetic Fallacy: It's not just about the weather
Pathetic Fallacy You may not know it, but you have probably been deceived into thinking that pathetic fallacy, as a literary technique, simply means using the weather to represent the mood of the character in the text, the typical examples being cloudy and stormy weather representing depressed or anxious states, or a beautiful and sunny day...
