Lenia Christodoulou - www.vientosensemble.co.uk
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach woodwind (excluding flute) and also 'cello. I can also offer tutoring for theory exams, musicianship and GCSE music.
Tell me about your qualifications.
Grade 8 oboe with distinction.
Grade 8 'cello with merit.
Grade 8 clarinet.
Grade 5 music theory.
Currently studying for a BMus(Hons) at Trinity College of Music with a place to study a Master's degree at the Royal College of Music in September.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have played in numerous ensembles from large symphony orchestras, chamber groups of dectets, quintets, trios and duos and have had a wide variety of recital opportunities. I have performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Festival Hall, Tokyo Opera City Hall, The Sage (Gateshead) and Symphony Hall. I have been teaching for several years and have had a variety of students, from very young children to adult learners. As well as private teaching, I have worked at Loughton Music Academy teaching 'cello, clarinet and saxophone and regularly enter students for exams for which I have a 100% pass rate.
How much do you charge?
For individual lessons I charge £25 an hour (£12.50 for half an hour). Paired lessons are negotiable.
Where do you teach?
I am based Lewisham, next to the Elverson Road DLR station. However, I am willing to travel around London where transport links and time allowances are reasonable.
When are you available?
I am able to teach most evenings after school/work hours.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
The age range of my students has been 5-15 years old and I also have had several adult learners. I teach all instruments to c.Grade 6, and oboe to Grade 8. I am willing to negotiate group teaching (i.e. for siblings or neighbours).
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare my students for either ABRSM or Trinity Guidhall exams (depending on the student), working towards a grade is beneficial to most students as it structures their learning as well as giving them a sense of achievement. I also offer coaching for GCSE music.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Royal Philharmonic Society. Incorporated Society of Musicians.
Where and with whom did you train?
I am currently studying oboe with Josephine Lively (who has played with all London's major orchestras) and baroque oboe with James Eastaway (who regularly plays with English Baroque Soloists, The Bach Players, Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and London Handel Orchestra). I have been fortunate enough to have also had lessons from Chris O'Neal (Orchestra of St. Johns and London Mozart Players) and played in masterclasses with Nora Cismondi (National Orchestre de France), Gareth Hulse (London Sinfonietta) and Alex Klein (Chicago Symphony Orchestra). I also studied 'cello under the careful tuition of Tom Waddington. I will be beginning lessons with John Anderson in September.
Tell me about some of your current students.
As well as teaching privately I have also taught cello, piano, saxophone and clarinet at Loughton Music Academy, the students are a mixture of children aged 7-15 and adult learners ranging from pre-Grade 1 to post Grade 5. I also took rehearsals of a string quartet and source and arrange music for the group. I teach both individual and paired lessons where appropriate. I have also helped lead an early years music making group run by Lewisham council, encouraging parents to engage with their children using music and broadening their learning. The children were split into two age groups, under 18 months and 18 months to 5 years old. Of my private students I currently teach 3 children clarinet, 1 recorder, 1 'cello and an adult learner oboe.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I am a very patient and conscientious teacher with experience of teaching and leading particularly young children in music making.
