About James
- What kind of experience do you have?
For more than five years I have worked full-time as a tutor, mostly in London. I have worked both in schools and privately, including for tuition agencies including Keystone Tutors, Greater London Education and Holland Park Tuition in London, and Fleet Tutors elsewhere. I have helped upwards of seventy students from both comprehensive school backgrounds as well as those attending the elite public schools such as Eton and Harrow. Recently I have taken 'super tutor' positions where I travel the world with a family providing support for their children in all subjects).
Most of this work has been preparation for a particular exam, although I have also had students who are studying just for the enjoyment of it. I feel well-suited to being 'on the other end' of the one-to-one style of teaching that I benefited from at university.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes. I have a full CRB disclosure available for review.

I'm a Cambridge graduate and full-time tutor who has studied mathematics, physics and philosophy at either undergraduate or post-graduate level and have an individual and small-group teaching qualification from the University of Cambridge.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I can offer either 'long-term' tutoring, where I see a student regularly, for an hour or so a week to help them keep up with their course, or 'intensive' tutoring, where I see the student many times a week for a short time. Many of my former students have found this latter approach extremely useful as preparation for GCSE or A-Level exams.
I also have a lot of experience with the 11+ and 13+ entrance exams to private schools, and have even traveled the world on residential positions preparing foreign students to enter the elite British schools.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in mathematics and mathematical physics from the University of Nottingham, an MA. in philosophy from University College London and an M.Phil in philosophy from the University of Cambridge, where I was awarded a prestigious CHESS scholarship to study for the degree.
I also have an 'Individual and Small Group Teaching' qualification from the University of Cambridge.
- How much do you charge?
Please see the top of this profile for my hourly rates.
(A small hourly rate increase may apply for cases where travel is significant).
- Where do you teach?
Most tuition takes place in the students' home and as such I have to consider the distance I will need to travel. In cases where travel is significant I will increase my hourly rate.
- When are you available?
I am available after 11am on weekdays until about 9pm (by then both tutor and tutee have usually had enough for the evening!)
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach primarily GCSE and A-Level students. In addition I have occasional first and second year university students who are studying mathematics as well as those studying other qualifications such as 11+ and 13+ entrance exams, Common Entrance, Functional Skills Qualifications, HE access courses and Open University courses - the latter come in all ages!
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Many of my students come to me during school holidays for 'intensive' preparation for A-Level or GCSE examinations that they will be taking the following term. This is something I have become proficient at and in many instances have helped students to achieve grades beyond that which they were predicted to obtain.
I also tutor students for the 11+ and 13+ entrance exams to private schools.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I hold online tutorials using a combination of Skype and an interactive whiteboard. I have a drawing pad for use with the whiteboard which makes the communications of mathematics and physics much easier. There is no need for the student to have any special equipment, only Skype installed on their computer.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
My approach to tutoring is friendly and informal. I prefer to let the tutee dictate the pace of a session by encouraging them to interrupt or ask me to repeat when we hit upon work they are not fully understanding.
I have found that the most efficient use of a tutoring session is for me to first outline the theory of what we are going to study in that session to the student, and then use the remainder of the time to work through questions with the student as they become progressively more comfortable with the content until, ultimately, they feel able to answer the questions alone.
The content of the sessions is always tailored to the particular qualification the student is working towards, and the student has complete autonomy over what we study together.

My son has just recieved his exam results to day, and a massive thank you to James for helping our son achieve these, James is organised, well prepared for all his lessons, and has a great method of teaching, highly recommended! thanks again.
James is a very effective tutor, I particularly benefited from his exposition of the theory side of my physics course.
5/5James was a well organised tutor and always had a very informative lesson planned, enhancing my knowledge of the course and increasing my confidence.
Great job.
5/5James is an excellent, well prepared tutor. He took time to go through each individual subject/topic with my son and gain a full understanding of our requirements before structuring a tutoring regime.
This regime worked well for all involved and I would like to take this opportunity to thank James for his help and recommend his services.
5/5Sam went into all exams alot more confident and prepared and he ejoyed his lessons with James.
The method of tutoring suited Sam with problems being worked through together. The method quickly identified weak areas and therefore did not waste time going over things which were not required.
5/5Effective and well-prepared, great.
5/5Jamie focused Sacha's mind - not an easy task for anyone. He encouraged her and gave her the confidence she required. He recognised that being a good tutor was more than just teaching the subject matter. He comes thoroughly recommended.
5/5James is a very good tutor. He is well organised, a methodical tutor, clear spoken and easily understood. Also, when the my son asked questions, he is a good listener and leads the pupil to find the correct answer for himself rather than merely providing him with the answer. His descriptions were very easy for our son to follow and increased his understanding of the subjects involved in AS Electronics and Quantum Physics.
We would not hesitate to recommend James to anyone. Excellent and thank you.James tutored my son for physics AS retakes. He was very thorough and helpful, and related very well to a teenage lad. Would definitely recommend him.
I needed a tutor to help me with my OU degree course in mathematics and decided on James. This has proved to be an excellent choice. He a highly effective tutor and I highly recommend him.
