About Nicola
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have over 25 years' teaching experience, nine of which have been as a private tutor.
The rest has been largely in Further Education but I have also worked in schools and in Adult Education. My most senior role in Further Education was as head of maths and science though most of my career has been in actual teaching.
In addition to this I have been a senior examiner for one of the main examining boards for many years.
I have tutored students from most of the schools in the area, including independent, grammar and comprehensive schools as well as FE colleges. I also have considerable experience of working with dyslexic students.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an up-to-date CRB Certificate..

I don't offer regular tuition but will give one-off lessons when needed.
My approach is tailored to the individual student. Lessons can be backed up with selected resources on-line.
I have very good results but expect students to work hard!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach mathematics at GCSE, IGCSE and A Level. I also prepare candidates for equivalence exams such as QTS numeracy.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
Apart from my degree, which is primarily in maths, I have teaching qualifications and assessors' awards.
- How much do you charge?
I will not usually charge for a brief initial discussion before tuition commences.
My tuition charges are £40 per hour for AS and A Level and £32 for all lower level qualifications.
All tuition must be paid for in advance.
1:1 lessons will be a minimum of one hour in duration.
Generally I like to meet students for a 1:1 lesson before embarking on on-line tuition.
When online tuition commences, it will be measured in units of 30 minutes.
If there is unused time at the end of a session, it may be carried forward to a future session provided there are no time-consuming administrative issues in the meantime.
Payment may be made in cash or via PayPal.
- Where do you teach?
I offer face-to-face lessons from my home. This is particularly convenient for students in Purley, Wallington or Coulsdon but some students travel from much further afield after receiving a recommendation about my work.
For online students, it doesn't matter where I am or where the student is, provided we both have the time and internet connection to communicate satisfactorily.
- When are you available?
I offer one-off lessons on an ad hoc basis. These can generally be arranged on a day and time to suit the student.
Typically these will be on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday but other days are possible and during school holidays is an option.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I usually teach students who are 15 or older. In addition to school students, I work with adults working towards professional qualifications or who perhaps require GCSE maths for further study.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I work with students studying GCSE, IGCSE, AS, A2 and equivalent. I have experience of Edexcel, AQA, OCR and MEI.
(The A Level modules I offer are C1-4)
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
In my opinion online tutoring is more effective with students whom I have met, in the first instance, hence I recommend a 1:1 lesson before switching to online sessions or a mixture of both.
I have an online storage system where I can place resources such as additional explanation or work on a topic.
Another popular method of communicating is for students to photograph a question on which they need help. This can be sent to me either by sms message or email and I can respond with annotations, further questions or, if appropriate, a worked solution.
I also use Skype, an on-line whiteboard and email.
