About Chiel

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have worked with people from all over the world. I have set up educational projects in Argentina, Palestine, USA, the Netherlands and of course England. I work for the Barbican on the Drum Works project, and am currently freelancing for other educational projects all over Europe and the world like the MCO ((concealed information) and Splendor Amsterdam ((concealed information) Before coming to London I was the student tutor teaching additional music theory and production skills at the Prince Claus Conservatoire in Groningen.

I am the label manager of WW Records ((concealed information) and know my way around the London music scene. I play live electronics in bands like Jetsam ((concealed information) and in projects of the barbican like the "Impossibilities Ensemble".

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I have studied Composition, Music & Studio Production with Klaas ten Holt, Daniel Testas (Adani & Wolf), Ivo Witteveen (QQ Audio, M-Ost) and am tutored by Monte La Rue, Richard Veenstra (Sonic-Me, Thomas Azier), DJ Roog and many more.
In my study at the Guildhall School of Music I have been taught by Sigrun Sveinsdottir-Griffith, Nell Catchpole, Fraser Trainer, Paul Griffith, Detta Danford, Natasha Zielazinski, Jo Wills, Guy Wood, Sam Mumford, Ross McDouall, Jan Hendrickse, Tim Steiner and many more.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a creative workshop leader at the Creative Learning Dept of the Barbican Centre and I am a label manager of the music label WW Records. This means I am well aware of the current music industry and can help with more then only the music-side of things if necessary.

I am a freelance music teacher and a music producer, composer and songwriter with over 15 years of musical experience which I would love to share with you. Please get in touch if you're interested or have any questions at all!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

My lessons are tailored to the individual and are designed to help you to become the best musician you can be.

I teach Composition, Songwriting, Music Production, Music Theory, Creative Music Making and any combination of these subjects.

Composition; Arranging; Software
I teach in all styles including electronic music, acoustic music, jazz and classical music. I can teach you arranging in which you learn to arrange your own or existing music in any style for any ensemble. I will also teach you how to work with notation software like Finale and Sibelius.

Music Production; Music Production Software;
All Music Production styles covered including electronic, acoustic and classical music. I can offer tuition on how to use Music Production Software like Logic, Cubase, Ableton Live and Pro-Tools.

Music Theory;
Classical music theory as well as jazz theory - up to and beyond ABRSM grade 8, A level and GCSE.

Creative Music Making;
Personal guidance on how to make your instrument your best tool to express yourself.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I am a recent graduate of the MA Guildhall Artist Programme in Leadership at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Here I extended my knowledge about how to work, teach and collaborate with anyone from all walks of life. Before this Master I did my BMus degree in Composition, Music & Studio production at the Prince Claus Conservatoire in Groningen, the Netherlands. I passed my final examination with distinction.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £30 per hour for individual lessons within Zone 3 East-London, and I'll happily travel further providing my travel expenses are covered too.
For younger or less experienced musicians, I can offer a shorter, reduced-price lesson; £18-20 for 30mins, £25-30 for 45mins.

I teach groups for the same rates - just split the costs, eg. £15 per person per hour for a group lesson with two pupils.

These prices are negotiable in exceptional circumstances.

- Where do you teach?

I will usually charge for any additional time/expenses for any lessons outside of Zone 3/4 East London. Local areas/places of work for me at the moment are East London, North East London and North London.

I can teach at home, as I have a fully set up home studio with everything we need up and running. This is located just 5-10 minutes walk from Leytonstone Tube station, Leyton Midland Road and Leytonstone High Road Overground stations.

- When are you available?

My timetable is fairly flexible throughout the week. Please get in touch and we will have a chat about a day and time that is equally good for both of us.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach anyone from no experience to high level musicians who need an extra or new challenge. My lessons are tailored to the individual and will be set up to make you the best musician you can be!

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

If necessary or requested I can teach any method or type of qualification necessary for the student and I am most familiar with ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall exams. I can also help students prepare for their GCSE and AS/A-Level exams.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I use skype, with webcam and screen sharing.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I am looking forward hearing from you. Don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or queries.
