- Personal Message
- Hi my name is Nathan and I'm a professional bassist living and working in London, I play both electric and double bass in a variety of styles. I am an enthusiastic, attentive and friendly teacher.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach both electric and double bass from beginners to advanced level students, covering a wide range of styles, including Jazz, Soul/Funk, Hiphop, Pop and Rock. I also teach music theory and can help students with grades and GCSE music courses.
Music technology is another area I cover, with an aim to provide a detailed working knowledge of Ableton Live and to also introduce pupils to sampling, synthesis and beat making - skills essential in contemporary music production. - Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have just graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London with a BMus (Hons) in Jazz Double/Electric bass. I also gained a distinction in a Teaching Skills Module as part of my degree.
I have a Higher Diploma (Distinction) from the Academy of Contemporary music, where I was fortunate enough to win the “Outstanding Bassist” award for my achievements during my time there.
I have grade 8 in Music Theory and grade 8 in Electric Bass (Trinity/Guildhall). - What kind of experience do you have?
- I am an experienced and busy performer as a freelance bass player. I have been lucky enough to gain a wealth of both live performance and studio recording experience. As a producer I am based at Dental Records in Stoke Newington, and have worked with both live/acoustic and electronic acts.
I have been teaching one-to-one lessons since 2007 and have taught a range of pupils in terms of both age and level. I have also been involved with workshops in schools around the Tower Hamlets area. - How much do you charge?
- £25 per hour or £18 for 30 minutes if lessons are taught from my studio. £30 per hour or £20 for 30 minutes if I travel to a pupil's house.
- Where do you teach?
- I usually teach from my studio and am based in Stoke Newington, North London, very close to several major transport links. I can also come to your home for lessons and am able to travel anywhere in Greater London.
- When are you available?
- As a freelance musician I can have quite a varied schedule, but I am flexible. I am able to teach throughout the week and weekend and can probably work fairly easily around your availability.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach all ages and all levels.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I am able to prepare students for Trinity/Guildhall/Rock School Grades in Jazz, Theory and Contemporary music. Alternatively, for students who do not wish to follow this path I am able to provide personal programmes of study that give a balanced learning experience, whilst integrating the music styles/genres that the student wishes to explore.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Whilst there I took Jazz Double/Electric bass lessons with Steve Watts, Geoff Gascoigne, Jeff Cline and Mike Janisch. I also studied classical double bass with Colin Paris of the London Symphonic Orchestra.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- I believe everyone, young or older, has musical potential and an ability to make great music. Its my job to help my students accomplish this, and, to make it an enjoyable experience!
