Personal Message
I especially enjoy teaching students on a one to one basis. This is the most difficult but also the most rewarding way of teaching English to foreign students as it is student focused learning.
Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach English to foreign students or those just wishing to improve their English. I am able to teach both groups and one to one tuition for individual students or a combination of both. I also provide Proof Reading services to school and university students, as well as research work for publishing companies.
I am currently tutoring several pupils for the 31+ (CE) exam. I have a full range of resources and am available at immediate notice to tutor towards an exam.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Level 4 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) from International House, London.
This is certified by the University of Cambridge.
I also have a degree in English Literature.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been tutoring students in English as a Foreign Language for four years. I have just finished an interesting and intense project teaching English with the assistance of the 'Harry Potter' novels with a student travelling all the way from Japan!
From January to May I worked for a company providing Business English Training for employees of Romanian Gas Companies. We provided group training as well as one to one tuition in general English. I am currently teaching students from Japan, the Czech Republic and Brazil as well as group sessions for South Korean Consultants. I am currently preparing an Italian student for a degree level translators course.
I work a lot as a proof reader on MA and Phd dissertations and as a researcher for (mainly) American writers. I have managed to combine the above with my own career as a writer.
How much do you charge?
I charge £20 for an hour.
Where do you teach?
I live and work in Sydenham SE26. At the moment I have students in Dulwich and Sydenham but as I tend to cycle I can reach most places in South East and South West London including the boroughs of Southwark, Lewisham and Bromley. However, I am willing to travel further afield.
When are you available?
I am flexible but I am very busy. I can timetable lessons around a students commitments. Available seven days a week.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages. My background is in journalism but I am also available if a student would like conversational practice. I can teach writing skill or preparation for exams or job interviews. I have a wide variey of course materials available and the full range of text books. I teach all levels from beginners to advanced.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
No.
Where and with whom did you train?
I trained with International House, London.
Tell me about some of your current students.
I am working with a beginner level student who is gaining confidence after starting with 'Hello' and Goodbye'. I have a Japanese student with whom I am analysing the texts of JK Rowling. I have just finished proof reading an LSE International History MA dissertation.
I work part-time for the Business Language Center based in Bromley, providing training for Government Employees from Eastern Europe.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I am friendly and reliable and a great believer in the local community. I take great pride in avoiding the commute into central London!
Learning to Communicate
I have been teaching one to one for four years now. One thing I have learnt in that time is that there is more than one way to crack a nut! The great advantage of one to one is that it is student focused. For example, I have had one student who had little formal education in her native...
He teaches me twice a week and I really look forward to the lessons, they are at the right level for me. - Maria Fabiano from Brazil
He did an excellent job. i.e. he planned special exercises exactly for my needs and I could talk as much as i wanted. I got loads of papers so i can repeat all my lessons at home. He was always patient and friendly and the lessons were fun and also interesting so made great progress during the week. - Martin Doerr from Munich in Germany
