- I am a highly experienced Brass tutor and trombone player, passionate about brass playing and sharing my knowledge and experiences with students.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach the trombone from grades 1 through to 8. I also teach other brass instruments including euphonium and trumpet to an intermediate standard.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I gained a BMus (Hons) Degree in Music from Trinity College of Music where I studied the trombone under the tuition of renowned trombonists Graham Lee, Mark Templeton and Roger Argente. I was given opportunities to play in orchestras, big bands, brass brass bands and musicals. I also took modules in teaching, creative music workshop leading and conducting. Whilst studying I taught privately around the South London area.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been teaching privately in the London area for the past 3 years. In that time I have taught 4 students who have all made real progress, passed grade examinations and developed their musical abilities. I have recently joined the team of teachers at Hillingdon Music Service and am also the resident brass teacher at Charlton Music shop. I take pride in my teaching and find nothing more satisfying than my own students improving each week. As a trombone player I have a wide range of experience, I have played with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Birmingham Sinfonia, Kensington Philharmonic Orchestra and many others. I'm also a founder member of award winning ensemble Westcombe Brass.
- How much do you charge?
- I charge £30 per hour, and I may ask for any travel expenses depending on how far away it is.
- Where do you teach?
- I teach at my home in Charlton, however I live very close to a train station and I am willing to travel within the London area.
- When are you available?
- I am very flexible as to when I am available and it largely depends on what I am doing that week. I am generally free on a few week nights per week, during the daytime and at weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach the trombone from Grades 1-8 and I am happy to teach people of any age. I currently teach two students who are aged 10 and 11, one is Grade 3 standard, and the other has only recently taken up the instrument. I also teach a student who is 21 and around grade 4 standard.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes I have an up to date CRB with Hillingdon Music Service.

The importance of playing in ensembles
Some people take for granted the opportunities given to them to be involved in groups and ensembles from a young age. Often children/adults who are learning an instrument are simply learning all by themselves without gaining priceless experience of playing in a group/band/ensemble. Playing with a group can give you a whole host of skills...
How Trombonists do it
I would recommend buying the book How Trombonists Do It as it is accessible to trombone players of all standards. It is great for beginners who need help on the basics of playing and it works brilliantly as a warm up book for more advanced players.
