- Personal Message
- I am a private clarinet, saxophone and academic music teacher based in Birmingham; I have studied music all my life and thoroughly enjoy sharing what I have learnt with others.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach clarinet, saxophone and music theory, often to prepare for Associated Board exams. I also offer private tutoring for GCSE music for those who feel they need help to keep up in school, or who want to develop a broader knowledge and understanding of the subject in order to persue it at A-level and/or university level.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I graduated with honours from Manchester University, attaining a 2:1 in music (specialising in performance). I then read for a PgDip at Birmingham Conservatoire.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I am formally trained in performance, composition, harmony & counterpoint, orchestration, musical theory, history, analysis & aesthetics.
I have experience teaching both adults and children at all levels privately. - How much do you charge?
- £25 per hour / £15 per half hour for clarinet or saxophone lessons.
£20 per hour / £10 per half hour for theory & school exam tutoring.
I also offer a free initial consultation lesson to anybody interested in studying with me. - Where do you teach?
- I normally teach from my home in Birmingham just on the edge of the city centre, though I am willing to travel to students' houses if it fits in with my schedule.
- When are you available?
- My hours are entirely flexible. Some pupils come at a regularly time once a week or fortnight, others prefer to arrange each lesson individually to suit their timetable.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach all ages and levels, from beginner up to post-grade 8 standards.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I can prepare students for graded music exams or for school exams at GCSE or A-level, although some people are happier to learn without the pressure of exams.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I do not have a CRB certifcate as checks are not easily available to freelance private tutors. I am happy for parents to sit in on lessons (in fact many rather enjoy it).
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I was taught by Tim Spencer and Kevin Banks (Bournemouth Symphony) in Bournemouth. I then studied at Manchester University under Mark Jordan (BBC Philharmonic Orchestra) and subsequently with Tim Lines (freelance) at Birmingham Conservatoire. I have played in masterclasses with Tony Pay, Paolo de Gaspari and Robert Plane.

Short but efficient practice tips
Efficient and focused practice for the terminally short of time. Whosoever we are – student, amateur, professional, tinker, tailor etc etc – we can all agree that there are never quite enough hours in the day to practise just so much as we should like to. We must endeavour therefore to use such regrettably short time as we have in a manner as...
