Personal Message

I am an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher of brass instruments. I can help you get exactly what you want out of your musical pursuits.

Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I specialize in classical trumpet. This can range from Orchestral playing through to chamber groups (quintets for example) to solo works. On top of this I can teach commercial trumpet playing such as function band playing to show work. I can also teach Jazz and jazz theory at beginner level.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied at the University of Chichester for a BA (Hons) in Music (2:1) and at Trinity College of Music for a Postgraduate Diploma in trumpet performance.

What kind of experience do you have?
As a trumpet player I have experience working freelance in many different styles and musical environments. I have worked with many orchestras and chamber groups throughout London. I also regularly work in pits for amateur-dramatics companies and play at weddings and events with function bands. I co-manage a successful quintet and would be quite comfortable coaching any similar groups.

Teaching experience ranges from students at a local prep school to private tuition from young to adult and group lessons.

How much do you charge?
I charge £30 per hour on a one-to-one basis. Lessons of 30 mins can be arranged for £15 if in a nearby location. I am more than happy to give a free consultation lesson as I understand that finding the right teacher is essential, although I would ask that travel costs were covered for this. Please feel free to contact me with any enquires for any special concessions for group lessons or special circumstances.

Where do you teach?
I live in Greenwich SE London. I teach at students' homes unless there are circumstances preventing this. In that case alternative arrangements can be made.

When are you available?
I am very flexible and will strive to be available at the most convenient time for the student.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach students at any age, up to university level.

Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare students for any musical grade they wish to complete; practical or theory. I am most experience with the ABRSM. I can also advise and prepare students for college or university auditions.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I have previously been CRB checked at an independent school I work at.

Do you belong to any professional organisations?
My diary is MAS (Musicians Answering Service).

Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at Trinity College of Music with Brian Thomson (RPO). Previous teachers have included trumpet virtuoso Mark Bennet, Paul Archibald and Henry Lowther.

Tell me about some of your current students.
I have an broad range of students, different ages and different experience levels. I enjoy working with them all and am proud of all there achievements.

Do you have a personal message for students?
I believe that learning to play a musical instrument is a skill that will stay with you all your life and in return for your diligence and dedication will give you endless rewards. I also firmly believe that it is a very personal journey, with this in mind I can assure students that I will tailor lessons to the needs of the individual so that every student can get out of it what he/ she wants and learn a skill that will stay with them forever.

Balanced Practice on the Trumpet

Any musician has to be able to balance out their practice time to really get the most out of that particular session. When it comes to playing the trumpet this is essential. As well as being a highly creative task, to play the trumpet is also a highly physical one. Many authors on the subject...

Student Testimonials
“Finding a good music teacher for your child can be a daunting task. As soon as we met Patrick, we found his energy and enthusiasm compelling. He applies that same energy and zeal to his teaching, pitching his approach at just the right level to make the lessons fun, whilst the subtler points of musicianship and technique are developed." - Martin Holder
"He is very personable and obliging as well as being a very fine musician indeed in his own right, which we know from attending concerts in which he has performed. He has a wide and extensive knowledge of music and shares this with his pupils at every opportunity in order to encourage and nurture their own love of music. His patient and careful approach with his pupils always gets good results” - Martin Holder
I have been working with Pat for two years now and he is a great teacher and musician. Always reliable and genuinely interested in how I am doing. I especially value the way he teaches me what I want which is to play jazz and I really enjoy the variety, most sessions introduce me to something new. I highly recommend him and it is very good to work with someone who is busy playing music professionally from classical, brass band to small group jazz and pop. - Tommy Hanchen
