Midwinter Tuition - Preparation for the important events in your life...

Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Drama up to A-Level and English up to KS3. I am willing to assist with Drama school auditions and also with speech making / public speaking. I offer 11+ preparation and Elocution training. I am looking to add LAMDA exams and Trinity exams to my repertoire in 2012.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BA (Hons) Performing Arts and MA (Hums). I have held QTS since 2002.

What kind of experience do you have?
I ran a touring theatre company for three years and assisted several young actors from our productions to enter Drama school. Two past students have now been accepted into RADA - cause for a huge celebration! I was a Drama teacher for seven years and alongside this I also took active roles in community theatre projects with young people including running my own young person's theatre group. I now tutor individual students at all levels in Secondary school to enable them to achieve their potential in English. My 11+ tutoring has had good rates of success over the past three years.

How much do you charge?
I charge £25 per hour for my tutoring services. If you are local then there is no fee for travel. I would be very willing to negotiate rates for groups, so please feel free to contact me. For a limited time only - if you book five lessons then you will receive the sixth lesson FREE!

Where do you teach?
I am primarily available for online tutoring and I am willing to teach here at my home. I live in Ashford, Kent. There are very good transport links here and there is a very high speed train service between here and London. The station here is called Ashford International. I am only willing to travel short distances as I have two small children I do not wish to be miles away from.

When are you available?
I am available Monday - Friday evenings at present. I usually take school half terms as holidays but will tutor through the summer.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
I am willing to teach any age. My speciality is 11-18 as I am a qualified Drama teacher at Secondary school level. I have also been teaching KS3 English alongside my Drama teaching and very much enjoyed it although most lessons used Drama to learn English! My Elocution students range from age 5 to age 95!

Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
GCSE / A'Level / 11+ examinations

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes I do.

Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
You will need a headset and microphone. We add each other on Skype as contacts. I will be online at an arranged time and when you sign in I will take you through the topic you have signed up for,e.g.non-verbal reasoning, using a powerpoint that we will both be able to see. For elocution I tutor online using a headset and microphone. You will need a mirror to watch and change your mouth shapes when I tell you too. A webcam is an advantage but not essential. For Drama and English coursework students may email me copies of their work and I will email back a response. For example, I can annotate notes for essay improvement. Students can also email me video auditions or links to their audition tapes online and I can offer advice. This service will obviously fit around the other tutoring so patience is required!

Do you belong to any professional organisations?
GTC, NUT.

Where and with whom did you train?
Suffolk College, Ipswich - Performing Arts degree. Voice tutor - Brian Ralph. Open University - MA in Humanities.

Tell me about some of your current students.
2009 - My 11+ students for last year numbered 5. 3 passed outright, 1 passed the Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning but failed the Maths. 1 I have never heard back from! 2010 - I tutored three 11+ students - all 3 passed. One student was awarded a place at Maidstone Girls Grammar School despite being way out of catchment, one at King Edward's in Birmingham. Throughout the year I taught thirteen Elocution students. 2011 - I tutored two 11+ students online and one in his home. It was a tough year. Two of my students got great results, but because everyone else did too they weren't in the high enough percentile to get a Grammar school place. I have six current Elocution students - four learn online and two in my home.

Do you have a personal message for students?
Acheive your potential. With a little help...

Passing the 11+ Examination

Preparation is the only answer to passing the 11 plus examination. Firstly, you must find out which elements of the exam are required in your area as each school and area may ask for different requirements. One boy I tutored had to do four different exam formats to apply for four different...

How to Succeed in GCSE Drama

When you begin GCSE Drama, spend a lot of time listening. Listen carefully to your teacher when they explain the course, concentrate on how much written work there will be, and commit to memory how long it is until your first examination. Many students do not listen at the start of the course...

I am chairperson of local running club and last week saw the AGM. I did the normal presentation and questions and answers and thoroughly enjoyed it. The reason I am telling you is I have had numerous compliments on my presentation etc. I felt confident all the way through, no umms!! Slow and confident and corrected some of the early "er" sounds!! Thank you Pauline without your tuition I would not have achieved this. Onward and upwards!! - Elocution student (12 week course), 2011

I had Pauline as my tutor for the last year, I learnt a lot from her and have got much more confident when answering questions.
I have also learnt a lot more vocabulary than I knew before she started tutoring me.
Pauline is an extremely fun tutor and I would definitely recommend her.I will miss having her as my tutor. - 11+ student, fortnightly lessons for a year, finishing September 2011
Pauline conducted all of Megans sessions via Skype which we found extremely convenient(we even took Pauline camping with us via
Skype!) and also we were free to listen into the sessions without disturbing Megan so we have heard first hand the difference the
sessions have made to Megans confidence. Megans 11+ test is next week and as parents we are happy in the knowledge that we are
sending our Daughter into the test a confident young lady with the help that she has received from Pauline. - 11+ student's parents, fortnightly lessons for a year, finishing September 2011
