- Maths and physics tuition at GCSE & AS/A2
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- Mathematics and Physics
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- BSc Physics, MSc Physics, PgDip Electronics, MBA. I am currently undertaking a PhD by research within the Earth Sciences Group at Southampton University. I model river meander dynamics, bank erosion and vegetation succession.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have experience in teaching maths and physics at GCSE and A level in both the state and private sectors.
- How much do you charge?
- My rate for an hour includes: * An hour of one to one tuition * Setting of prep/homework (optional) * Email support between tutorials (within limits) * I'm flexible in the tutoring I undertake which can range from introducing fundamental concepts to helping tutees cram for an exam. Whatever the objective I'll plan a route to help get you there.
- Where do you teach?
- I can teach at the student's home if the tutee is located in Bournemouth or nearby. I can also teach in Bournemouth Public Library and over the internet with an interactive whiteboard and skype.
- When are you available?
- I am available most weekdays including evenings during term time. I am also available out of term time.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- 11 through to mature students
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- AS and A2 level maths and physics but also GCSE maths and physics. Some 11+ and similar tests/exams.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I have an Enhanced CRB issued in July 2011
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I offer online tutoring using skype and a shared whiteboard.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- My teacher training (PGCE) was undertaken at Nottingham University.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Tutees will have a pretty good idea of where they need extra support so lesson by lesson I can be guided by them. Physics and maths is mostly about problem solving and this tends to be the focus in tutorials. Got a problem integrating trig functions? Need to get your head around those projectile questions? Or are you struggling with theory? Why is the mass of a nucleus less than the mass of its constituent parts? Binding energy - what's that all about? Practice makes perfect and I'll be with you every step of the way.

A random walk
Ever wondered why we study probability theory and all that stuff about normal distributions? The "bell" shape of the normal distribution makes it a convenient choice for modelling a large variety of random variables encountered in practice. For sure, it's used throughout the social sciences and it's long been known that experimental error...
