About Alastair
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have have always been highly praised for my piano performances. At University I was awarded the highest mark of my year for my recitals, resulting in several scholarships. I was selected to perform Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the University orchestra and Schumann's Piano Quintet with the highly acclaimed Allegri String Quartet. I have studied solo piano with Gordon Fergus-Thompson of the Royal College of Music, and piano accompaniment with Michael Dussek at the Royal Academy of Music. I have given numerous public performances in concert halls across the UK as well as Belgium, Italy and the Czech Republic. I will be playing at the Kyoto International Music Students Festival in May 2014. I have worked as accompanist at both Southhampton University and the University of Surrey. I have won the Denis Horner accompanist's prize at the Kathleen Ferrier Competition for young singers, gained second prize in the Scott Huxley Accompanying competition and was a finalist in the Wilfrid Parry Brahms competition. I am now a free-lance pianist, playing at functions and concerts throughout the year and I enjoy having a busy teaching schedule.

Would you like to learn how to play an instrument? I am an experienced one-to-one piano teacher on the piano based in London.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Aside from the piano, music theory is included as a standard part of all piano lessons, to follow the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music's grade syllabus with preparation for Grade 5 music theory a focus. (Grade 5 music theory is compulsory for any candidate wishing to sit practical music examinations for Grades 6-8 ABRSM). Even if you are not preparing for exams, music theory is an important part of understanding how music works and therefore I cover what you need to know in your lessons.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I began playing the piano whilst at school and by the time I left had achieved my Grade 8 examinations on piano and organ and had performed the Grieg Piano Concerto with the school orchestra. I went to the University of Nottingham where I graduated with an Upper Second Class Honours Degree in Music (majoring in performance) in 2007. Since then I have achieved the LRSM (Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music) for piano performance with distinction.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £20 for a 30 minute lesson or £35 for an hour's lesson.
- Where do you teach?
I can travel to the pupils house if in zones 1-3. I also have facilities to teach at different locations if the pupil does not have a piano.
- When are you available?
As I am a professional pianist, I am available during the week in the day and in the evenings, as well as at the weekends. I can give lessons on a weekly or fortnightly basis, either throughout the calendar year or on an academic term basis.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I have experience of teaching both children and adults, beginners and those with experience - the only condition is that they enjoy music! I am also a qualified classroom teacher, specialising in music education for 11-18 year-olds.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Preparations for all examinations for all of the major music examination boards can be included in the lessons, although this is certainly not obligatory! I also prepare all piano pupils wishing to take Grade 6 or above for Grade 5 music theory as part of the piano lessons.
