Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Art and Design up to degree level, and History and Politics up to and including A-Level.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a 1st Class BA(Hons) in Fine Art. I also achieved a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (Merit), A2 levels History, Politics and Art (all A grade) and As Levels Geography (B) and Photography (A).
GCSE's - 2 A* (Art, Geography), 7 A's (History, double science, english language, English Literature, French, Mathematics), 1 B (Textiles).

What kind of experience do you have?
Since primary school I've always tried to explain to my contemporaries things that I've managed to understand, whether they are Maths, Science, English, History, Art or Geography. I love the feeling of being able to share understanding with others: there's no point having knowledge if you don't share it!

How much do you charge?
I charge £30/hour for Art&Design and £25/hour for History and Politics. These are flat-rate fees which are inclusive of my travel costs. I am happy to carry out additional A-level essay reading/feedback outside of tuition times (this can be done via email), this will be at a set £15 fee/essay. For those students wishing to push themselves within the subject, optional articles and recommended reading can be provided; in order to cover photocopying costs a £5 upfront fee will be charged. For Art & Design (foundation - degree level) essay reading, a fee will be available on application dependent upon help needed.

Where do you teach?
I can tutor at home but would prefer to tutor at students' houses. The nearest station to me is Manor House tube, Harringey Green Lanes or Harringey overground (zone 3).

When are you available?
I am fairly flexible, daytime sessions are possible as are afternoons/evenings.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
GCSE, A-Level, Foundation - geared towards Fine Art (Art and Design).

Do you have a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes

Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
If a student wants online tutoring, we can arrange a time that is suitable for both of us and correspond via instant messenger, alternatively I am happy to help with coursework/essays via email. As I am more of an evening person I don't mind tutoring late evenings for that extra bit of encouragement/help (I know what its like staying up to get that portfolio/coursework finished!)

Do you belong to any professional organisations?
University of the Arts (Central Saint Martins) Alumni, Artist Network and New Work Network (www.newworknetwork.org.uk)

Where and with whom did you train?
I studied for my degree at Byam Shaw, Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, for my foundation diploma at Kingston University and my schooling at Coombe Girls School, New Malden.

Tell me about some of your current students.
I have recently helped a student progress from a D to a B grade for his A level Politics re-sits: 'All I can say is thank you. Im shocked you made me get them in the little time we had.' I have just finished this term with two GCSE History students (OCR/Edexcel), and three History A-level students (Edexcel/AQA). One of my A-level History students moved from a D to 3 marks off an A for her coursework due to our focus on essay techniques, structuring and extra reading: 'Thank you so much for everything you helped me so much!' (See Testimonials/Exam Results 2009 file).

Do you have a personal message for students?
If you have a desire to learn but often feel left in the dark in the classroom, or completely swamped with a seemingly relentless workload and often find yourself struggling to balance the different subjects, I can help you. Especially if you feel like you're constantly being tested for how much you can remember rather than what you actually understand.

Essay writing is also a key area, in which I can help you to develop strategies, to plan and structure your arguments into clear and effective essays.

As someone who only found out they were dyslexic after handing in their dissertation (I got one mark off a 1st for it), I believe that no matter what anyone classifies you as...'low achiever, high achiever'... if you're passionate about something, you truly can succeed.

If you struggle with FACTS!

If you struggle with remembering FACTS, don't panic! There are many different ways in which people's brain's work, and some people are just naturally better at remembering some things than others. The further on you progress through education, the less emphasis is placed on facts, instead you...

The Night Before...

I find the best approach for revising is NOT Cramming the night before, you only end up panicking yourself and having a meltdown which isn't a good place to be in at 9pm the night before! The most useful approach and which students agree on, is creating a time-line over your course time frame;...

Pressures of A-Level Art

I had always vowed that I would never want to inflict on anyone the pressure I felt my teachers did when I was taking my A-level in Art, that I would never want to train to be an Art teacher. This is partly because I felt that it reduced the creative process to a matter of ticking boxes, rather...
