Interview:
Which subject(s) do you teach?
Having come from a professional music school and now studying maths at university, I teach a wide range of subjects. In short, Maths, Physics, Piano, Saxophone, Theory/composition; and I teach these in both Jazz and Classical disciplines.
How much do you charge?
Consultation lessons are generally free, less perhaps travel expenses. Lessons are between £15 and £20 depending on subject. Classical piano lessons will be £25 for higher levels, but will remain £20 for entry levels. Lessons in London may be more expensive than those in Cambridge, since I will have to somehow compensate for travel expenses. Group discounts can be negotiated, e.g. I can teach 2 maths pupils in one sitting at a price not much higher than 1 pupil.
All prices are negotiable and very flexible.
Where do you teach?
Venues can be negotiated. For music lessons for example it is sometimes more convenient for me to go to students' homes, unless their homes are remote and not easily reachable by public transport, in which case I will ask of you to come to my home for the lessons, since I don't have a car.
When are you available?
Generally every afternoon. However, my schedules are not very regular. Maybe it's easier for me to discuss times personally with pupils.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I can teach maths and classical piano at high levels: maths at all levels up to and including undergraduate degree level; and classical piano up to and including DipABRSM diploma level. At undergraduate degree level however, it does depend in which area of maths the pupil is seeking tuition.
I teach all other stated academic subjects from GCSE to A-level, and musical instruments and theory/composition from beginner to Grade 8 or equivalent.
Do you have a CRB disclosure certificate?
Yes but it's out of date, naturally. I can get another one if you insist.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I'm currently in my final year, studying mathematics at Cambridge, and expecting to go into graduate studies in mathematics.
Before university I was educated in a professional music school, Purcell School of Music, during which time I majored in classical piano and musical composition, and minored in jazz saxophone. I'm expecting to go to Royal Academy of Music to study jazz piano in 2009.
Where and with whom did you train?
My classical piano teacher at Purcell School of music was William Fong, student of Ronald Smith and others. My composition teacher at the time was Dr. Jonathan Cole. Both of them can be easily Googled if you're interested.
I currently study Jazz piano with Barry Green, who teaches at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Royal Academy of Music. His website is www.moletone.com.
What kind of experience do you have?
I started tutoring all sorts of subjects, including music lessons, back when I was studying for A-levels. I was tutoring other A-level students, and they honoured me with high levels of respect and it was surprisingly successful.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Students who are serious about the subjects they are studying are very welcome.
