I believe music lessons should be an enjoyable experience. You can never be too young or old to start to learn. As a specialist recorder player and teacher I am passionate about the instruments I teach and this comes across in my lessons.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Recorders, Flute, Piano, Baroque Flute and Piccolo. All lessons will include aspects of aural and theory. I also coach chamber music (recorder and woodwind ensembles) and can provide music workshops for larger groups of students.
I can teach a variety of musical styles, baroque, contemporary, jazz and electronics.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
Masters in Music Therapy, received from Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Bmus (Hons) First Class Degree, received from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
ABRSM's Teaching Diploma in Recorder and Flute.
Completed teaching skills and workshop leadership modules as part of my degree and masters.
- How much do you charge?
Private music lessons will be charged at £25 for half an hour and £35 for an hour if I travel to the pupils home.
Private music lessons will be charged at £20 for half an hour and £30 for an hour if the pupil travels to my home in Tooting. (parking available)
Group music lessons are to be negotiated depending on the size of the group.
First consultation lesson is charged at £15.
- Where do you teach?
I teach both in my own home in Tooting (parking available) and in my pupils homes.
- When are you available?
I am available from after school hours into the evening. I can also provide daytime lessons for those who wish, dependant on the day.
I am available for lessons in school holidays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
All ages! All levels!
I usually recommend children start the recorder at the age of 5 or 6, depending on the size of their hands.
It is never too late to start to an instrument and some of my pupils have found their music lessons are an excellent retirement project.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
If the pupil wishes I will prepare them for the ABRSM graded exams.
Recorder: I prepare pupils towards grades 1 - 8. I can teach up to and through diploma levels.
Flute: I prepare pupils towards grades 1 - 8.
Piano: I am able to teach from beginner level up to grade 3.
It is not a problem if a pupil does not wish to enter exams as music should be fun and some people do not enjoy the experience of examinations.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Skype.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Music lessons are a very personal experience for each individual. Whether the aim is to prepare for exams, play individually or with friends in a group I am able to encourage and help pupils in achieving their goal. I was lucky enough to have had an excellent and passionate teacher when I started to learn the recorder aged 6 who also gave me the grounding of a good technique. I am aware of how important the early influences can be and believe that, above all, lessons should be enjoyable.
