First Class Honours in English, University of Oxford, 2006
- Personal Message
- I specialize in teaching academically strong pupils who wish to be stretched, such as undergraduates and those looking to enter the leading universities. I have been in demand for exam preparation and Oxford and Cambridge interview coaching, and for help with essay technique.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I have extensive experience preparing applicants for universities in the UK and America, such as Oxford, Cambridge and members of the Ivy League. Alongside this I teach most subjects whose focus is on discussion and the writing of essays, with the core of my work being in English and History.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have First Class honours in English from the University of Oxford, which I left in 2006.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have taught in England, Italy and Hong Kong, including a year spent teaching History from Year 7 through to A level at Christ's Hospital, a co-educational boarding school in Sussex. I have taught something between fifty and a hundred private pupils, many of these for lengthy periods of time.
- How much do you charge?
- My usual fee is £45 per hour. I charge for travel when a lengthy journey is involved.
- Where do you teach?
- I usually teach at pupils' homes in London, or at mutually convenient locations such as cafes. I will shortly be moving to a new home near Kennington station, and will give some lessons there.
- When are you available?
- My timetable is quite flexible.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I have taught students from primary school to pensionable ages, and most in between. I prefer to teach pupils over the age of fourteen, albeit with occasional exceptions.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I am happy to prepare pupils for their undergraduate final exams, A and AS levels, the International Baccalaureate (IB), GCSE, IGCSE, and so on.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- My most recent CRB check dates from Spring 2009.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I am happy to look at and comment on work submitted online.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- My lessons have a happy, positive atmosphere; they are intentionally challenging. I give my full attention to the unique requirements of every single pupil whom I agree to teach.

Demystifying University Applications
Good universities want an application to prove simply that a person is teachable. In other words, a personal statement showing how two or three particular experiences (such as an experiment, a conversation, a journey or a poem) inspired the applicant to do further research, how they have proved to be the germs of a world view, and how they...
My Testimonials
|
Intellectually rigorous ... lively, engaging and entertaining. This tuition went way beyond the exam syllabus. I was stretched, challenged and questioned into thinking far more originally and independently. Rob's teaching was more akin to an undergraduate tutorial than any A level lesson I have encountered. - Olivia, 17, Islington |
