- I want to encourage and help students to attain their potential in their flute playing.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach the flute and am happy to start beginners on the recorder. I believe it is important to help pupils with music theory and aural skills when working through ABRSM examinations.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have recently finished my degree in Flute Performance at Trinity College of Music, London, having gained a BMus First Class Honours. I studied under Lynda Coffin, Anna Noakes, Emer McDonough and Julian Coward. I am going on to study for a Masters in Music Therapy at The University of Roehampton in September 2011.
I took Grade 8 at the age of twelve and achieved my Performance Diploma with ABRSM in 2003. I have A Levels in Biology (B), Psychology (B) and English (C), and an AS Level in Chemistry (B). - What kind of experience do you have?
- I have a range of experience gained from a variety of areas throughout my musical journey. I have experienced different types of music making starting with a church folk group many years ago! I was Principal Flute with my county chamber ensemble and helped to tutor the flute section. I have been tutoring students privately for a while and have achieved excellent results.
I have attended summer music schools and undertaken masterclasses with players such as William Bennett, Denis Bouriakov and Robert Winn. I have studied flute methods extensively and recently wrote a dissertation on flute technique with first-hand research collated from top players of the present flute world. I recently enjoyed shadowing a peripatetic teacher in a local grammar school.
Most importantly, I have been coached and taught by some of the most prestigious contemporary flute players in the country and have benefited from their expertise and methods. I have spent years thinking about, refining and researching the best ways to practise and play the flute. I love to share this with my pupils. - How much do you charge?
- I charge £25 per hour, £12.50 half an hour or £18 forty/forty- five minutes.
- Where do you teach?
- I will be teaching from my accommodation at Barat House within the grounds of The University of Roehampton campus as of September 2011. My nearest train station will be Barnes and nearest tubes Putney and Hammersmith. I will also be willing to travel to local areas such as Kingston, Putney, Wandsworth, New Malden, Hammersmith, Merton, Wimbledon and most of southwest London, however I am happier to teach from my accommodation due to travel costs and my timetable.
- When are you available?
- I am fairly flexible regarding evenings and weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- All ages and all levels.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I am happy to help to prepare my students for Grade examinations with ABRSM.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I have a recent enhanced disclosure CRB check for my Music Therapy course.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I am a founder member of the Sark Trio formed in 2010. Sark is an exciting unconventional trio for flute, viola and guitar, based in London. We play music from the 18th century to the present day, including arrangements of classical, Latin American and romantic pieces. We are especially available for weddings, business conventions and events. See http://www.sarktrio.com/#!contact for more information.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- Prior to beginning my course at Trinity College of Music, I studied under Jen Hutchinson, (BBC Philharmonic Orchestra). Whilst at Trinity, I have been tutored by Lynda Coffin (Principal Flute of the London Concert Orchestra and the Mozart Festival Orchestra), Anna Noakes, Emer McDonough (Principal Flute of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) and Julian Coward (2nd Flute of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra).
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- I like to help students to nurture their talent or rediscover a dormant one. I respect the individuality of each of my pupils and acknowledge that everyone has a unique method of learning- which it is my aim to utilise so that I can help my flute students to flourish. I hope to apply all I have learnt from many top professionals and all the knowledge and skills I have acquired over the years to my pupils in an effective and enjoyable manner.
My Articles
What is proper, effective practice?
Too many flute players spend too much time "practising" just to tick a box before their next lesson. Do they devote any time to consider what it is they actually need to improve on? Or do they mindlessly run through their pieces and set their eye on the clock so that after thirty minutes they can breathe a sigh of relief and go and watch...
