Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I have taught a number of subjects, including History; which I teach up to A Level. RE; PSHE; Preparation for Working Life; Citizenship; Politics; Photography; and some skills classes in Maths and English and Learning to Study. I also run scrapbooking and card making classes in my spare time.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I did a degree in Humanities, specialising in History in the final year. I then went on to complete my PGCE in Secondary History in 2001, and have been teaching ever since.
What kind of experience do you have?
As a teacher, I have 8 years experience, I have taught in both the state and private sector. I have also taught both girls and boys. I have privately tutored for 3 years, and enjoy it very much. I am also an A Level examiner and have been a GCSE examiner for History.
How much do you charge?
Between £10-20 depending on the level of specialism. For example, A Level is greater than KS1 or 2; and it requires more resources. Also up to £5 to cover travel expenses, depending on location. For more than one pupil, I offer a 20% discount.
Where do you teach?
I am happy to come and work at your house, but I will also run lessons at my home, nearest station is Sholing/Woolston.
When are you available?
Any day from 5pm. All days at weekends. Also I try and continue to offer the same tution hours during holidays.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
Have taught from 5 upwards, but am more confident the older they are, as a teacher I have worked in secondary and high schools, so mainly taught 11-19 year olds.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I have a up to date (July 2009) enhanced CRB check.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can advise on homework, planning essays, research etc. I also have a webcam and am happy to work through Skype.
Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at Reading University, and obtained my teacher status in 2001.
Tell me about some of your current students.
Currently, I tutor a year 10 student, whom I am working with to improve her coursework and raise her acheivement across all her subjects. In the past I have had students who are dyslexic, have reading issues and need help to organise their studies.
Do you have a personal message for students?
My aim is to show you how you learn, so you find your work easier and feel better about what you can do. And believe me- you can do it!
What Kind of Learner Are You?
When I go to work with someone for the first time, there is one thing I want to know..... What type of VAK they are? No, this has nothing to do with cleaning - its a term that indicates how best you learn, and as a tutor. I like to know how that is! Some people learn by Visual means. This means...
