About Sam
- What kind of experience do you have?
I am an experienced and busy performer as a freelance saxophonist and woodwind player. The Sam Braysher Quartet won the UK Jazz Radio Young Performers' Award 2010. Wide variety of experience in small jazz ensembles, big bands, woodwind doubling on shows/musicals etc.
I have taught a big range of pupils, both in terms of age and ability, from providing basic instrumental technique and musical fundamentals to children and complete beginners to giving specialist jazz lessons to advanced instrumentalists. I have experience of entering pupils for ABRSM (both classical and jazz).
I also teach jazz saxophone at undergraduate level to music students at City University London.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Whilst there I took jazz saxophone lessons with Martin Hathaway, Malcolm Miles, Jean Toussaint, Carlos Lopez-Real and Mark Hanslip. I also studied classical saxophone with Christian Foreshaw and flute and clarinet with Nick Moss.

Hi, I'm Sam. I'm an enthusiastic, patient, friendly and reliable teacher, so please do get in touch if you'd like to have a chat about potentially having some music lessons with me.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Saxophone is my main instrument but I also teach clarinet, recorder and flute to intermediate level. I can cover all styles, including classical, jazz, pop and funk. I also teach music theory and can help with GCSE and A Level Music. I like to cover areas such as ear training and general musicianship with all of my pupils.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have just graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with a first class BMus (Hons) in jazz saxophone. I also gained a distinction in a Teaching Skills module as part of my degree. I am now undertaking a Jazz Fellowship at GSMD.
I have an A grade in A Level music and an A* at GCSE level.
I have Grade 8 ABRSM saxophone.
- How much do you charge?
£25 per hour or £17 for 30 minutes if lessons are taught from my house. £30 per hour or £20 for 30 minutes if I come to you. Free consultation lesson, 45 minute rates and group discounts available.
- Where do you teach?
I teach from home and am based in Leytonstone, East London. I also spend a lot of time based around Barbican/Moorgate/Liverpool Street areas. I can also come to your home for lessons and am able to travel anywhere in Greater London.
- When are you available?
My timetable is fairly flexible at the moment - weekday daytimes or early evening would be particularly convenient for me, but I can probably work fairly easily around your availability.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I enjoy teaching pupils of all ages and abilities. I currently have students that vary wildly in these areas, from primary school-aged beginners to advanced adults who require some specialist tuition in jazz and improvisation. (See 'What kind of experience do you have?' above).
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am able to enter and prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity/Guildhall grades (classical, jazz and theory). As well as pieces, preparation for the practical exams will cover aspects such as aural tests and sight reading. I can also attend to the administrative side of exam entrance and arrange an accompanist. Alternatively, I am happy to work with students who do not wish to follow this path, and can work with students on specific genres or songs of their choosing, or suggest suitable pieces/exercises for them to work on.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Playing a musical instrument can be an incredibly rewarding experience and it's never too late to start learning, so get touch if you think you might be interested!
