Personal Message
Hi, I'm Sam and I'm a Clarinet, Saxophone and Piano tutor based in Sheffield.
I graduated from Sheffield University in 2010 achieving a First Class degree in Music. I have also recently gained a masters specialising in Performance and Composition.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Clarinet and Saxophone to a high level, and piano up to about grade 5. I am also a composer and experienced in the use of Sibelius and can offer lessons in both.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I recently graduated from Sheffield University with a first class BMus and have also just completed a Masters specialising in composition and performance.
BMus Single Recital (2010) - First Class (70)
ABRSM Clarinet Grade 8 (2006) Merit
ABRSM Theory Grade 5 (2003)
4 A-levels, including A - Music
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching Clarinet, Saxophone and Piano to a variety of different levels and have been accredited with Derbyshire Music Partnership since last year.
I have also been an active performer for many years, both as soloist and an ensemble player. Recent solo performances include Stravinsky's 'Ebony Concerto' and Copland's Clarinet Concerto which I played with Orchestras of Sheffield University.
How much do you charge?
My first lesson is always free of charge. I then charge £22/hr, and £15/half hr. If you are based in Sheffield, then this price will not change, however additional travelling expenses may be required should you live outside Sheffield.
(my hourly rate is due to change in the next few months to £25/hr - though this is still a bargain price!)
Where do you teach?
I can teach at my home or at the student's home at their convenience.
I am essentially based in Sheffield, but am will to travel to areas such as Chesterfield, Eckington and Rotheram depending on expenses.
When are you available?
My timetable is very flexible so I can fit around your schedule.
Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are my best days for teaching.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I can teach children or adults, and can teach any level on Clarinet and Saxophone, and up to Grade 5 on Piano.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare my students for any grade level on Clarinet and Saxophone, and can also prepare students for diploma level Clarinet.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I have a full, up-to-date certificate, specified to teaching children in schools, which I obtained through Derbyshire Music Partnership.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am accredited with Derbyshire Music Partnership.
Where and with whom did you train?
I am currently having lessons with the former Head of Woodwind at the RCM, Janet Hilton.
Throughout my years at university, I received teaching from Tony Houghton.
Tell me about some of your current students.
I teach a number of children who are either in the early stages of learning, or are preparing for early grades.
I also have some private pupils who are older and have just begun to play or picked the instrument up after a long time. Most of these pupils are learning for the fun of it, which is, after all, why we do it!
Do you have a personal message for students?
If you are looking for tuition on Clarinet, Saxophone or Piano, whether beginner or advanced level, at a bargain price, you have come to the right place!
I endeavour to and give comprehensive teaching which sets up solid technique while also playing the music you want to play.
I very much look forward to hearing from you.
