- Personal Message
- I believe that good singing is comprised of passion, musicality, and a strong grasp of technique.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach classical singing and lyric diction. Singing lessons include regular discussion of diction, musicality, theory, repertoire, technique, etc. I teach Lyric Diction in French, German, and Italian.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I earned my Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance at the North Carolina School of the Arts and my Master of Music degree in Advanced Vocal Performance from the Royal College of Music.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been teaching pupils of all ages for over ten years, including teaching at a theatre, working with teenage singers in a school, and teaching private singing lessons. I have also worked musical events with the BBC and outreach events with the RCM and NCSA. Operatic and performance experience includes leading roles with the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute, scenes performances in the United States and Europe, as well as numerous oratorio appearances. I have made a dedicated study of singing technique (my Spoken Masters Dissertation was on methods of breath support/management, and earlier I made a detailed study of overtone production in the singing voice) and aim to tailor my teaching to each individual student's needs so as to help each student reach his or her full potential. I currently teach over 20 private students in London as well as teaching in a school.
- How much do you charge?
- I charge £45 per hour. Minimum lesson time is 1 hour.
- Where do you teach?
- I teach from my home near Earl's Court. It is easy to get to by public transport and I live within a 5 minute walk from the nearest tube station.
- When are you available?
- I teach during the weekdays between noon and 5pm. I may be able to arrange evening/weekend lessons in certain circumstances.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach intermediate and advanced singing students aged 14 and older. I will also teach beginners in certain circumstances. I also have a number of younger students but space for younger students is currently full at this time and I am only currently looking for older students. I will teach Lyric Diction to singers of any level who are looking to understand the rules behind the pronunciation and to incorporate it into their singing.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I prepare my younger students for ABRSM exams. With my older students, I suggest taking a more free form to the lessons, yet I am always happy to help students prepare for any auditions or performances they wish to take part in.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I trained at the Royal College of Music and with Dr. Marilyn Taylor at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- My students have achieved audition and performance success and gained recognition in their courses, whilst my younger students have achieved much success with the ABRSM exams. I have helped singers with vocal problems recover their voices, built a technique for beginning singers, and refined more advanced voices.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Classical singing is a beautiful art form which encompasses language, poetry, music, drama, history, and physical strength and control. It is a rewarding pathway to follow, yet requires hard work and discipline. My aim as a teacher is to train the student in all of these areas, as well as emotionally, to help singers sing healthily, build up stamina, create beautiful music, and give a moving performance.
