Personal Message

Experienced, successful maths tutor, having had considerable success in helping pupils to pass the 11+ and attain the grades they want and need to access FE and HE.

Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
Mathematics and Statistics. From 11+ preparation through to A-level, including 13+, GCSE, AS level, Further Maths, AEA and STEP. I have also worked with trainee teachers who are taking the QTS Skills Tests and I have helped trainee teachers access their course by helping them prepare for their equivalency tests.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Maths degree from the University of Warwick (2:1 MMath Hons obtained in 2000). This is a four year course - essentially a BSc with an extra year added on at the end which allows students more scope to investigate a broader range of subjects or develop a deeper understanding of certain topics.
I also hold a master's level qualification in Manufacturing from Cranfield University and a Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector qualification.

What kind of experience do you have?
I have been tutoring since January 2008 and have worked with over 130 students in that time. The majority of these students have been GCSE and AS and A2 students. I have also worked in a school as both a maths teacher and a one-to-one tutor.

How much do you charge?
£25 per hour with a £5 travelling fee if I travel outside of Stratford upon Avon.
Discounts for pre-paid blocks of lessons, and small group tuition are available.
£20 per hour for online tuition before 4pm on a weekday. £25 an hour all other times.

Where do you teach?
At my home or at the student's home. I generally only accept older students (Yr 11 and older) in my home. I teach in and around Stratford upon Avon mainly. But I also travel around South Warwickshire including Alcester, Welford on Avon, Bidford on Avon, Temple Grafton, Ardens Grafton, Broom, Barton, Langley, Bearley, Ettington, Clifford Chambers, Wootton Wawen, Henley in Arden, Alderminster, Wellesbourne and Snitterfield. I am willing to travel up to 10 miles outside of Stratford.

When are you available?
I am available weekdays during the day as well as the evening, though my weekday evening availability is generally very limited. I am also available at weekends.

Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
GCSE (linear and modular routes), Additional Maths, AS, A2, AEA, STEP. 11+ and 13+ entrance exams. This includes all the main exam boards. A-level modules include C1, C2, C3, C4, M1, M2, S1, S2, D1, D2, FP1, FP2 and FP3.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes. This is an enhanced disclosure, the same as any teacher would have. I am happy to provide this for inspection upon request.

Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Please contact me for details. I use Skype and Blackboard Collaborate and can give you a free demonstration.

Where and with whom did you train?
University of Warwick (1996-2000)
Cranfield University (2003-2004)

Tell me about some of your current students.
I teach students from comprehensive, private and grammar schools. I also have experience in lesson planning as three of my students did not attend formal maths lessons (for differing reasons) so I had to design schemes of work for them. Favourite students... I really don't have any! But I always admire the ones who really try hard despite not really enjoying the subject or the ones who are really inquisitive about the subject.

Do you have a personal message for students?
Tutoring is not like normal maths lessons. I expect you to work hard - you won't just sit back and listen to me for an hour. The more you do the more you will get out of our time together and the more you will enjoy them. Don't be afraid of making mistakes - it's all part of the learning process and don't worry if you don't understand something straight away. It often takes time for our brains to make sense of new ideas, concepts and knowledge. I will try to explain things differently if you don't understand it first time and I am always very patient.

My Articles

Equipment needed for maths

Mathematical Equipment Throughout school pupils should carry with them certain mathematical instruments in order to properly answer questions that they may face. Fortunately, beyond a pen, pencil and an eraser, there isn’t really a lot that is needed and most can be purchased very...

Calculators - what do you need

Calculators A calculator is now a requirement for every maths course delivered in UK schools. Some modules forbid the use of calculators but there are always others which require them. So, it’s important to get a good one. I am putting calculators in three categories: basic, scientific and...

Successes

This is a list of some of the notable successes I have had with students over the past two years. Year 6 girl recently passed her 11+ exam and was accepted into the grammar school of her choice (March 2010). Year 10 boy moved up from Foundation Tier GCSE (where he was obtaining high C’s on a...

Tutoring: the Best Job I've Ever Had!

I decided on becoming a tutor back in the autumn of 2007. I did my maths degree nearly ten years ago and haven't really used it since. As part of previous jobs I delivered training courses to small groups of adults and always enjoyed those. I also remember helping my younger sister out with her...

Student Testimonials
Simon is a very good tutor and his help has made me confident I can gain the A that I need at A level maths. If I cannot understand something he will explain it in a different way. There has been no topic he has failed to explain well. - Helen Geddy, A-Level (C3, C4 - Edexcel)
Craig has found the maths support you provide very useful. He says the way you explain how to tackle new problems is normally clear. Access to your private sessions has given him more confidence and an opportunity to follow up areas he has found more challenging. - Craig Stanley, A-Level (C3 - OCR)
Andrew found his sessions really helpful and he understood things which had previously puzzled him. Would certainly use Simon again. - Andrew Watts, GCSE (AQA)
Simon is a very professional and reliable tutor. Our daughter seems to be responding very well to his teaching and we are very pleased with her progress. I would highly recommend Simon. - Izzy Kington, AS Level (C2, S1 - AQA)
Simon has already made a great contribution and has helped James from the very first lesson. James looks forward to his lessons and is no longer daunted by the prospect of his A level. Thanks - Jamie Leonard, AS Level (C1, C2, S1 - Edexcel)
Simon is both professional and personable and is tailoring the sessions according to specific problems that Charlotte is having with maths at school. After only 2 sessions, Charlotte is already feeling more confident, and feels able to ask questions without feeling 'stupid' (her comment). Excellent! I have no hesitation in recommending Simon for maths tuition. - Charlotte Dyer, GCSE (AQA)
