About Emily

Emily Griffiths is currently studying for her Masters at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, under the tutelage of Marilyn Rees and Roy Laughlin. Prior to this she competed her undergraduate degree at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
A regular soloist in oratorio works, highlights include; Haydn's 'Theresienmesse' and 'The Creation' at Exeter Cathedral, Bach's 'St John Passion' with Welsh Sinfonia, Mahler's Fourth Symphony and Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, with Harlow Chorus, in addition to solo engagements at Gloucester Cathedral, Wigmore Hall, LSO St. Luke's, Royal Albert Hall and St. Martin-In-The-Field. She recently participated in a recital of early Poulenc pieces with Graham Johnson as part of the Poulenc festival at Guildhall.
Operatic roles include: Erodiade in Stradella's San Giovanni Battista (Guildhall School Opera, cover), Euridyce in Gluck's 'Orpheus and Euridyce' (Winterbourne Opera), Barbara in Floyd's premiere of 'MICROmegas' (Tete a Tete opera), Belinda in 'Dido and Aeneas' (Opera Sforza), Galatea in 'Acis and Galatea', Susanna in 'Le Nozze di Figaro' and First Lady in 'Die Zauberflöte' (all with Opera'r Ddraig), Ella as the title role in the premiere of 'The Sleeper' (WNYO), Johanna in 'Sweeney Todd' (WNYO) and Arienne (cover) in the staged oratorio 'The Journey'; a newly commissioned piece by WNYO's MAX department. In the summer of 2013, Emily was a chorus member with Opera North for their production of 'Peter Grimes on the beach, as part of the Aldeburgh festival, which was filmed as part of a nationwide cinema release, and was nominated for a Gramophone Music Award and won the International Opera Award 2014 for Anniversary Production. The Sleeper (WNYO) was also recently featured on BBC Radio 4 as its Saturday play.
Emily is a recipient of the Florence Warren Memorial Prize and was the winner of the Freda Parry scholarship. She is a member of the Guildhall Consort, directed by Eamonn Dougan, the Associate Conductor of The Sixteen.

I am a conservatoire-trained classical singer and have four years' experience teaching adults and children; for exams, auditions or for fun.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach singing,music and music theory - from beginners to advanced. Lessons include work on a good vocal technique including posture, breathing and support. Also musicality, theory of music and foreign language tuition as required. I tailor a service that meets the individual requirements of the pupil.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied for four years are the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, before going on to doing a Masters at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Both studying classical singing; operatic and song repertoire.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £30 an hour, or £16 for half an hour. If below age 10, I recommend the half hour option unless combining singing with music theory.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at home in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere or can travel within the Cardiff area.
- When are you available?
I'm available Monday and Tuesday evenings and Wednesdays all day.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach from ages 5 to 85. Beginner to very advanced. It is not a prerequisite to be able to read music. Classical singing is my speciality, but I am also happy to teach Musical Theatre, Jazz and Pop Music.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare students for any Grades I-VIII in Voice, and up to Grade V in Music Theory.
I also can prepare students for auditions; working on performance and repertoire choice.
