Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Harpsichord and Piano.

Tell me about your qualifications.
Dip.RCM ARCM LRAM

What kind of experience do you have?
I have years of experience as a professional harpsichordist, giving recitals and making recordings. I have always enjoyed teaching and have taught harpsichord at the Royal College of Music, the Royal Welsh College, Radley College and Kings School Canterbury. I also teach many private piano pupils, including coaching professional pianists in performance practice. I enjoy starting young pianists off from their very first lesson just as much as teaching post-graduate level harpsichord.

How much do you charge?
I charge £30 per hour for weekly piano lessons, but offer the first trial lesson free. For harpsichord students at a more advanced level I charge £40 per hour.

Where do you teach?
I teach from my home in Bradford-on-Avon, within easy reach of Bath, Corsham and Trowbridge.

When are you available?
I am available during weekday afternoons and early evenings.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all levels, from beginners to advanced.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
No.

Where and with whom did you train?
I studied at the Royal College of Music and at the Sweelinck Conservatorium, Amsterdam.

Tell me about some of your current students.
At the moment I have piano students ranging from year 4 of primary school to 2nd year of university. My harpsichord pupils tend to be enthusiastic adult amateurs or post-graduate students at the moment. I occasionally arrange master-classes or visits to see antique instruments for them. Some of my piano pupils will take the opportunity to try their baroque pieces on the harpsichord and some will actually move from one instrument to the other.

Do you have a personal message for students?
The philosophy behind my teaching is that it is a shared experience. I learn a huge amount from my varied students and hope to enable them to deepen their relationship with music in whatever way suits them best.

A Buyer's Guide to British Harpsichord Makers

It is clearly beyond the scope of this short article to attempt to list and consider every maker of early keyboard instruments who is active in Britain, so I have confined my focus to plucked instruments – harpsichords, virginals and spinets – and those makers who currently have the highest...
