- Personal Message
- I'm Stuart Smith, a drums and percussion teacher living in Grayshott. I have over 5 years teaching experience and my enthusiasm and passion for the subject sets me apart from other teachers.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach Drum Kit and Percussion.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a BAhons degree in contemporary music performance specialising in drum kit. I also have a higher diploma from the same institution; the academy of contemporary music in Guildford. I hold As levels in music and business. I have taken grade 8 drum kit with Trinity Guildhall and grade 5 music theory with ABRSM.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been teaching pupils for over 5 years. I believe the lessons I give are fun and enriching, allowing the student to reach their full potential. I have taught Rockschool and Trinity Guildhall exams and have a 100% pass rate. Please see my CV for further information.
- How much do you charge?
- I teach at students homes for £30 per hour - £25 for 45mins this includes travel costs up to 15 miles. My most popular lessons are 45mins as they are good value and offer enough time to fully explore the lesson material.
I also run adult group lessons in Grayshott; details below. - Where do you teach?
- I run an adult drum-set crash course on a Monday evening in Grayshott at Opus studios. Lessons are available as part of a group of like minded adults and are £15 per hour with a group maximum of 3.
I am a visiting drum teacher and I teach at students homes. You have to have a drum kit electric or acoustic but I can bring everything else.
5 Reasons why having lessons in your own home makes more sense than a private studio or at school:
• You can have the kit set up as you want electric or acoustic.
• The lessons are focused on your individual development and are tailored to your needs. No “one size fits” all approach.
• You do not have to wait in the car or waiting room for your child’s lesson to end.
• You only pay for the lessons you use and you can cancel 24hours before the lesson with no penalty.
• You do not waste money and time on travel to and from the lessons.
Lessons can take place anywhere within a 20 mile radius including Haslemere, Guildford, Liphook, Bordon, Godalming, Farnham, Alton, Petersfield and Liss - When are you available?
- I am available Monday to Friday until 9pm each evening. The most popular times are 4-6pm so if you are interested in a regular after school slot get in touch with me ASAP. I also operate a waiting list for students who wish to have a particular time. At the moment I have a one or two slots that have opened up after school due to pupils moving on to different areas or university.
I occasionally have availability at the weekend but due to performance commitments I cannot always guarantee a weekend slot. - Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach students from the age of 7 upwards and I can teach from complete beginners to advanced players.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I have experience teaching for the Rockschool graded exams Debut - grade 8. I can also teach the Trinity Guildhall sylabus and prepare pupils for GCSE or A level music performance exams. I have experience of pupils using drum lessons as a skill for their duke of Edinburgh awards. I passed my grade 8 in 2006 I also studied GCSE and As level music. My pupils have a 100% Rockschool pass rate.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I have an enhanced disclosure CRB from 2012.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I am a member of Hudson Music's Teacher Integration Program and the Musicians Union.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I originally started drumming in a marching band playing the snare drum then moved on to the drum kit when I was at secondary school and studied under Tom Reavey. I passed my grade 8 drums and my grade 5 theory while I was there. I was taught by Mike Sturgis, Pete Rilley, Paul Elliott and Stu Roberts at the ACM in Guildford. We also had frequent guest lectures from drummers like: Dave Weckl, Thomas Lang, Andrew Small, Akira Jimbo and John Blackwell Jr.

Muscle Memory
The importance of muscle memory. Learning to play the drums can be tricky to start with. The co-ordination required to play basic patterns alone can take time to master. Muscle memory can help recall rhythmic ostinatos and patterns subconsciously. If practised correctly your hands and feet will be able to replay patterns stored in your muscle...
A Healthy Practice Routine
Healthy Practice Routine I believe the best way to practise drums is with an organised practice routine. A balanced diet of rudiments, beats and fills as well as plenty of musical applications like learning tracks or being creative. Part 1. Warm Up Warming up on the drums can include stretches, warm up patterns and rudiments. I usually swap...
