- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach English and French up to A level. I can also offer Latin to GCSE/Common Entrance level. Other areas that I cover include effective writing skills for mature students and essay writing skills.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a BA Joint Hons in English and French and a PGCE in English main subject/French subsidiary.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I taught for a few years in a private prep school before specialising in private tuition for over 25 years
- How much do you charge?
- I charge £30 per hour lesson for all levels up to GCSE, £35 for A level. These rates apply to lessons taught at my home. I charge an extra £10 per lesson for travel. On line lessons are charged at £25 per hour.
- Where do you teach?
- I prefer to teach at home but will travel to students' homes within a 10 mile radius from RG7 - primarily in the Wokingham, Reading (South Berkshire), Eversley (North Hampshire) areas.
- When are you available?
- I can teach most times and days of the week but not usually weekends. I try to offer flexibility re times of lessons recognising that these days we all have busy schedules. Most pupils have a 1 hour lesson per week but this can be increased in the run up to exams if required. Fortnightly lessons may be an option and online lessons can be used to supplement face to face teaching.

- I teach mainly GCSE and A level students but can also offer coaching to younger students preparing for Common Entrance/Scholarship exams. I also tutor degree/postgrad students in essay writing.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I prepare students for GCSE, A level, CE and Scholarship to major public schools.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- My enhanced CRB check was done in 2006 when I was a school governor.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I offer an online marking/annotating of practice papers, exam questions and draft essays. I have also used Google chat or phone coaching to assist past students.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- At present I am tutoring several students in the Woking area having recently moved to RG7 - they are a mixture of English A and GCSE level. I also have pupils from this area preparing for French at CE, English at GCSE and AS level and French AS level
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- One to one tuition has many advantages as it is tailor-made to suit the needs of each individual. I try to focus on each student's strengths and build their confidence so they can improve their results. Tuition can be enjoyable as well as effective.

French Oral Exam Tips
This is the time of year when many students are tackling their oral exams. The present format is that students learn an initial short presentation and then have to answer several prepared questions. This format means that most students learn the responses by heart and then repeat them back to the teacher/examiner. The answers will have been...

Effective Essay Writing
Why do we write essays? I'm sure many students ask themselves regularly - why do we have to write essays! To some extent at GCSE and to a greater extent for A level, students have to write so many essays that they often lose track of just why they are writing - in other words they lose the wood for the trees. They have a tendency to just 'open...

‘’I would highly recommend Sue to anyone seeking a tutor. She taught English Literature and Language to my son for two years leading up to his GCSE exams. We were so pleased with the grades he achieved – beyond our expectations. Sue managed to get the best from my son, working with his strengths and weaknesses and he enjoyed and very much appreciated the lessons.’’ - Caroline A |

"Sue has been tutoring my children for the past three years and they cannot praise her enough. The lessons have given them confidence and my daughter says that Sue is an inspiration. My daughter achieved Grade A for English and French at GCSE and I am sure that Sue helped her to improve her grades in both subjects. She has continued to see Sue for her English Literature A Level. We would thoroughly recommend Sue as a tutor to help your son/ daughter with their English or French at GCSE and A Level." - Janet N |
