Personal Message

I have 18 years experience tutoring dyslexic, dyspraxic, motivation, mild autism & literacy problems, with successes at ages 4-34 ! Above all, I believe learning should be fun.

Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I am a fully qualified, trained and experienced Dyslexia specialist, also tutoring dyspraxics, AHDD, and Aspergers syndrome students as well as people with mild autism. I tutor all the Arts subjects and numeracy and basic Biology. My main basis is English and I teach reading, grammar, punctuation, and essay organisation. I speak fluent French as well as some Spanish, German and Italian.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Hornsby Diploma in Dyslexia, a C.L.A.N.S.A. (RSA) Diploma, and a Performers Licentiate of Trinity College of Music - London (LTCL), in 'cello.

What kind of experience do you have?
I have had 18 years experience with young people tutoring mainly dyslexic students from ages 4 to 34 and to all standards. I was, for 5 years the Head of a Dyslexia Departement at a 6th Form College in South Kensington (London) where I taught students to cope with GCSEs and A-levels. We had a lot of success, but eventually there were too many SEN students coming to the school and they closed the department.

How much do you charge?
I charge on a sliding scale, but usually £49.00 per hour.

Where do you teach?
I teach at my home in Hampstead, North West London.

When are you available?
I am available mainly afternoons, by arrangement. I also usually work much of the school holidays.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach from age 4 to university level and beyond.

Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I will work with students preparing for all arts subjects qualifications. I have frequently, highly successfully, worked with students on material about which both of us have known very little at first!

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I have an up-to-date CRB check.

Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I do not tutor online at present.

Do you belong to any professional organisations?
No.

Where and with whom did you train?
I trained (see above) at the Hornsby International Dyslexia Centre, in London.

Tell me about some of your current students.
At present I have mainly schoolchildren: 4 who are substantially dyslexic and doing extremely well. The first (and most important) thing they gain is confidence.

Do you have a personal message for students?
I teach - especially the young ones - mainly by games (they love the stickers if they win!). I also can show them how to cope with homework if and when that is a problem (it can often be quite debilitating for students). With specialist help, homework and studies can be finished much more quickly and effectively and take away that burden of the nightly grind.

Differences Between Spoken & Written English

What are the main differences between spoken English and written English? Are they the same?   In general I believe that spoken and written English are very different, surprisingly so considering that English is one language. Of course, this does not always apply, and there are many...

Student Testimonials
Susan has made a night and day difference to our 6 year old’s progress, confidence and happiness. From the very first meeting our daughter liked and trusted Susan and is always happy to see her. We saw a dramatic difference from the first session: where our daughter had been scared to write, she now wanted to write and write. Something had truly been unlocked for her. We feel totally reassured that we are in exceptionally safe, kind, hands. We cannot recommend Susan highly enough. - A.Hoad
I want to thank you for the considerable help you have given to Rachel. As a result of her weekly visits I have seen a visible difference in her confidence and overall approach to school work. You have encouraged her to think for herself and take her nerves in hand when dealling with challenging academic problems -most evident in her approach to exams. Her marks now reflect her true ability.
It was a relief to find a wonderful teacher to help Rachel develop such a positive approach to her work. - K.Rix
