Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I currently teach History at primary, Key Stage 3 and IGCSE level, and am an examiner for the Edexcel GCSE Modern World History paper. I also offer tuition in History AS/A2. Please note, however, that I cannot check or comment on GCSE/A Level coursework prior to it being submitted to your school or college for marking.
Tell me about your qualifications.
My BA (Hons) degree was gained at Cambridge University, which I followed with a PGCE in Secondary History at Manchester Metropolitan University. I also have an MA in Art Gallery and Museum Studies (specialising in the museum as a learning environment), gained at Manchester University.
What kind of experience do you have?
I qualified as a teacher in 2001, and since then have taught humanities in a comprehensive school in the north west of England and at a private school in Cyprus. I am currently the Head of History at Briteschool, an online school based here in the UK. I am also a GCSE History examiner for Edexcel.
How much do you charge?
I am happy to arrange an initial half hour consultation for free, during which we can assess what your needs are. After this, I charge 25.00 GBP for KS3 tuition, and 30.00 GBP for GCSE and A Level.
Where do you teach?
Students living in the Winchester area are welcome to come to my home or we can arrange to meet in a central location such as the library or a cafe. I am also more than happy to teach online, either via email or through the internet using my 'virtual classroom'. I do not drive, but if you live in central Winchester then I may be able to come to you.
When are you available?
I am have some availability during the day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and at the weekend. School holidays mean an increase in the amount of hours I have available for tutoring.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
In my professional life, I have taught mainly 8-18 year olds, but am happy to consider adult students.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Currently, Common Entrance, GCSE, IGCSE and AS/A2 level History.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
As a self-employed tutor I do not have a CRB Certificate, but I am happy to provide references or to put you in touch with the parents of current or previous students.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can assess and comment on your work via email, or use my 'virtual classroom' for a more 'conventional' lesson. I have recently run several short bespoke online courses for small groups of students, and would be happy to discuss this further if you think it might suit your needs.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am registered with the GTCE and am a member of the Historical Association.
Where and with whom did you train?
As mentioned above, I trained for my PGCE (Secondary History) at Manchester Metropolitan University, which included placements in schools in Salford and Bolton.
Do you have a personal message for students?
If you set your mind to it, you can do it!
