Personal Message

Hello!

I'm Tom. Please read on to learn a little about me...

One thing that distinguishes me from other tutors is that I hold an MPhil in my chosen subject of English - a postgraduate research degree from Cambridge University. This is a major step above the B.A. which most tutors hold (though I have one of these too) and only one step away from a PhD.

What made me leave academic study was the desire to act and, through acting, to understand myself and the world in more ways than merely the intellectual. My second life, as a professional actor, has taught me about performance and what it is that makes people perform to their fullest potential: in a word, motivation. Throughout tutoring I try to motivate my students, building their confidence and their desire to learn, so that they can perform to the utmost of their potential, whatever they're studying.

The Use of Poetry Anthologies

Visit the poetry section of your local Waterstone’s and you will probably find there are more poetry anthologies to choose from than there are volumes by individual poets. For general use I would recommend only one of these, the same one as I have used myself since preparing for interview at...

Student Testimonials
Tom helped me prepare for my Oxford entrance interview. He was always well prepared, and taught with the utmost commitment and verve. I couldn't have hoped for a better experience. He was tremendous at honing textual analysis and essay writing skills, and encouraged an expansive and imaginative engagement with literature. Aside from his intellectual rigour, he was professional, punctual and flexible; during the stressful period of entrance preparation these qualities were very much appreciated! - Natalia Thornbrook
