About Thomas
- What kind of experience do you have?
In terms of teaching experience. I spent a year in France teaching English in a 15-19yrs college, so not only do I have experience teaching, it is also specifically language-teaching. On top of this, I have volunteered in a primary school so I also have experience of working with young children. These teaching experiences have been both in classes of up to 25 students, and in one-to-one settings, therefore I would be confident and comfortable tutoring in various environments and working with all ages.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I am currently waiting for my DBS application to be verified and returned to me.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at the University of Sunderland, spending one of my four years in France, gaining experience speaking and using French in real-life situations. Before that I studied at Totton College in Southampton, and Hardley Secondary School (Now known as New Forest Academy).

'One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.' - Frank Smith
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach French from beginner level, all the way up to A-level standard. I can also teach beginner level German and Spanish upon request.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a graduate degree in French as well as A-Level and GCSE French. I also have GCSEs in German and Spanish.Aside from the language qualifications I have a Level 2 Award in Coaching Studies which serves as proof that I am an accomplished leader and instructor.
I have also applied for an independent DBS Check which will be validated soon.
- How much do you charge?
I would normally charge £15/hr but I would need to ask for a slightly higher price if the travel were particularly arduous for me.
Group lessons would be discounted to £12/hr per person up to 4 people; groups of more than 4 people would cost only £10/hr per person.
Prices could be negotiable for special circumstances (e.g. an hour may be too long for small children).
- Where do you teach?
I am willing to teach from my home or travel to students' homes, and would also be willing to meet at a mutual venue, subject to cost and availability.
I can travel to Hythe, central Southampton and most places around the Waterside/New Forest area.
- When are you available?
I can be flexible to suit the needs of the student. I am available weekdays and most evenings, and weekends by negotiation.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I am willing to teach students of all ages and from beginner level up to A-Level.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
If I am provided with the course content or guidelines, I can help to prepare students for GCSE exams and A-Level exams.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Written work would be emailed to students, and I would insist on conversation work as well, as it is a vital part of language learning. This would be carried out through Skype.
Payments would be required through bank transfer; sadly PayPal is not an option for me.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
To potential students, I would say that lessons will be understandable and easy to follow. I have only recently left education so I know that some materials used in schools can be a bit dated or generic, so I can assure students that my lessons can be tailored to pique the interest of each student, using up-to-date, contemporary sources. I will try to get to know students and make my lessons relevant to them.
