Personal Message

I am a friendly teacher with a wealth of experience in teaching pupils of all ages and abilities, in a range of different styles.

Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
Piano, Keyboard and Theory. A full range of styles taught from classical through to popular, jazz, and blues etc. I always ensure that lessons are tailored to suit the interests and needs of each pupil so that beginners are soon playing their favourite music and advanced players are provided with material that will stretch their abilities, improve their technique and musical understanding and allow them to master new styles and be able to be creative.

Tell me about your qualifications.
BA in Music from Bristol University.
ABRSM Performance Diploma (DipABRSM)

What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching the piano to both adults and children for 10 years. Having gained experience in playing and teaching many different types of music I believe I can offer a very flexible lesson plan designed to get the most out of pupils. I always ensure that they have a solid grounding in technique and theory of music so that they can get the most out of what they are playing, whatever style of music they enjoy. I have had consistently strong results with pupils that have wanted to enter for ABRSM and Trinity piano exams as well as with pupils who only want to play for themselves, learn jazz theory and playing styles, accompany themselves singing or set about mastering classics that they are struggling with.

How much do you charge?
£30 an hour. £18 for half an hour.

Where do you teach?
Most of my lessons are taught at pupils' houses. The areas I cover include Islington, Angel, Highbury, Finsbury Park, Holloway, Stoke Newington, Dalston and Manor House.

When are you available?
Any time, although my busiest times are weekdays afternoons/early evenings.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
From age 5 upwards, beginners to advanced.

Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
ABRSM and Trinity grades 1-8 for piano and jazz piano.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes.

Where and with whom did you train?
I have been playing the piano since I was 5 and I have had a number of different teachers including those I had while I was studying music at Bristol University.

Tell me about some of your current students.
I really enjoy meeting the wide range of different people I teach and sharing ideas and a love of music. I currently have beginners, some aged 5, some adult, through to more advanced players taking exams or enjoying playing Beethoven sonatas and Chopin and Rachmaninoff Preludes. I also have pupils learning to play jazz standards from lead sheets, mastering music theory to help their own songwriting and improving their technique to help them play live in a band.

Do you have a personal message for students?
If you are looking to take your playing further I can show you how to expand your abilities, musical ideas and your repertoire. If you are thinking of starting to play, get going! A love of music and a willingness to dedicate a little time to practice will go a long way.

My Articles

Two helpful ways of improving your playing.

One of the most common problems with the playing of many less experienced players is that it is littered with pauses, stops and stilted phrasing. Nothing quite spoils the excitement, lyricism or beauty of a melody like a gap half way through caused by the player’s feverish attempts to try to...
