Tell me about some of your current students.
I have a wide range of students, from children to people of retirement age seeking to take up an instrument, perhaps one which they gave up earlier in life due to work and family commitments. I have students who are at post graduate level who need more advanced tuition, and specialise particularly in helping people with tension related playing injuries or nervous anxiety which can inhibit their playing.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I take all lessons at a pace comfortable for each student and specialise in teaching a 'tension free' approach to playing where the emphasis is on musicianship as well as technical mastery of the instrument. I am happy to help students through grade exams, but equally comfortable teaching people who are learning just for fun.
Late Starters or Starting Again, Adult Learners.
Many people come back to playing a musical instrument later in life – having perhaps learned at school and given up as a result of other activities taking over. Some may have really wanted to carry on but found that the pressures of work and family made a regular commitment to learning...
Developing Musicianship
When playing any musical instrument (such as the violin or viola) it is good to start developing the active musical imagination right from the beginning. So often, this doesn't happen and we reach a stage where we feel technical competent but don't really feel as if we are connecting properly...
Performing Nerves and Stage Fright
One of the great joys of playing a musical instrument is the feeling of being able to share the music with other people in the form of a performance. Yet something which is capable of giving both performer and audience such a feeling of mutual wellbeing, can also lead to a negative experience -...
Enjoy your playing
One of the most important things to bear in mind when learning any musical instrument is to find satisfaction and joy in playing music itself, regardless of the level one plays at. In order to get the most from playing, it's important to approach everything (even a short piece or a scale) as a...
