How to Sound Like a Pro Tin Whistler
One of the biggest challenges of the whistle is playing at the break-neck speeds required for much of the traditional repertoire, without sounding sloppy. Here's what I'd recommend: SLOW DOWN Paradoxically, it’s much quicker to learn to play fast by starting slow and gradually speeding up, than it is to start at full...
Improve Your Scales!
I never miss out the scale exercises in tutor books and I've tried a couple of other scale practice books before but this one really is in a different league. There's one book covering grades 1-3 and another for grades 4-5. I started using them a month or so ago and have used them with all my flute students (apart from the very early...
Music Lessons for Pre-school Children
Research shows that starting formal instrument lessons before the child is emotionally, physically or intellectually equipped for them is more likely put children off music-making rather than encourage them. However, there is plenty you can do to prepare your toddler for the time when they are ready to try learning an instrument. Parent and...
Improve Your Aural!
This series of book/CD packages, written by Paul Harris, is one of my favourite teaching aids. ‘Aural skills’ in the context of singing or playing an instrument is about accurately hearing musical elements in order to understand how the music is constructed and being able to accurately reproduce rhythm and pitch. Sounds a bit technical...
My Testimonials

I was so fortunate in finding a flute teacher like Verity. Verity delivers fabulous tailor-made lessons. I very much look forward to each one. She is always warm, friendly and welcoming and intuitively understands at what pace you need to learn. Although firm in the standards she expects, she is always kind and encouraging. After just a few months of lessons with Verity, my flute playing had improved beyond what I thought possible. I cannot recommend enough Verity’s teaching ability. - P. Waldock |

Dear Verity, Year 2 really enjoyed the tin whistle. Thank you for coming to our arts week. - Yr 2, Mickleover Primary School |

Thank you for teaching P, she is really enjoying her lessons and is so confident, which is lovely to see as she is normally very shy. Learning the flute with you has really given her a spring in her step. Thanks again. - S. Sheffield |
