Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I specialise in teaching GCSE and AS/A2 level maths as well as teaching English to students of all ages (up to GCSE). I also work with KS2 and KS3 students helping them with general maths and English. I prepare students for the eleven plus entrance exams covering all areas including maths, verbal reasoning and non verbal reasoning.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied for a BA in Economics which is a varied subject including maths and essay writing. I also studied maths and science at A levels and have a keen interest in these areas.
What kind of experience do you have?
I initially worked as a secondary school teacher in various schools within Birmingham and Nottingham. I have been providing private tuition for over 4 years working with students of all ages in several subject areas.
How much do you charge?
I hold small classes of no more than 4 students for which the prices vary depending on the subject required. Maths GCSE is £15 per hour lesson and English GCSE £10. The eleven plus class is a 2 hour slot charged at £25. AS/A2 level classes are usually an hour and a half to 2 hours long depending on the areas being studied (e.g. pure, statistics etc) and prices start at £25 for 1.5hours and £30 for 2 hours. KS2 and KS3 students have a 1 hour class where we cover key areas of the curriculum at £15 per hour. One to one is charged at £25 per hour with discounts available depending on the number of students and how much time is required. I also offer a free no obligation consultation/assessment.
Where do you teach?
I hold small classes from my home in Handsworth (near Hampstead road and Handsworth Park) where I have a classroom set up. I also travel out to students' homes for one to one lessons if they wish. I travel within 5 miles of Handsworth which includes Great Barr, Handsworth Wood, Aston, Edgbaston and the surrounding areas. I also travel to some parts of Walsall and West Bromwich.
When are you available?
Classes take place at my home in Handsworth from 4.30 till 8.30 weekdays and Saturday afternoons. I am available earlier in the day (1.30pm onwards) and some evenings for one to one lessons. I offer intensive maths classes to KS2, KS3, GCSE and A level students over the summer holidays- these classes are usually 2 hours in duration and aim to improve students mathematical skills over a short period of time so that they are better equipped when returning to school. I also offer similar classes for English and Science.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
Classes are specifically for students aged 8 to 18 in the following areas: maths GCSE; English GCSE; AS/A2 level maths; KS2/KS3 English and maths and eleven plus. I offer one to one help to younger students struggling with maths and English and am also happy to take on adult learners.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I hold a full CRB certificate from my time working with various schools and agencies.
Where and with whom did you train?
Nottingham Trent University
Tell me about some of your current students.
The majority of my students enjoy lessons and show improvement within 2 to 3 months depending on their individual ability.
We had a 100% A-C pass rate in 2009. Several of the students taking their GCSE maths and English exams this year were originally entered for the foundation paper and predicted C's or D's, after a few months tuition they were moved up to the higher tier and went on to achieve A's and B's.
Our eleven plus results this year (2010) were great with over half of my students gaining places at the King Edward's Grammar schools. Overall 6 out of 8 of my students were offered places at a Grammar School.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Students should be aware that tuition is not like school where the teacher has to rush through topics without having the time to really stop and make sure everyone fully understands the work. I aim to provide a relaxed but purposeful atmosphere where students are comfortable enough to ask for help when needed. In such a small group I am able to work on a one to one basis with students if they are struggling in certain areas. I provide regular homework, free revision materials and online support to all my students in order to help them achieve their full potential.
