- Personal Message
- Don't ever be scared to ask for guidance when necessary. The aim is to improve your performance and achieve the grades you need.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I taught History, Sociology, Citizenship until my recent retirement. I can teach KS2 Maths and English and have prepared students for 11+ exams.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have an Economic History degree from London University. After obtaining that degree I qualified as a Teacher at Birmingham University on a one-year PGCE Course.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been a secondary school teacher for 30 + years. I have taught GCE Sociology for nearly ten years as Head of Social Science and GCE History for longer. Also I taught GCSE History for about 20 years and 'O' and CSE levels before that. I have been Head of History at two other schools with experience as a Head of Year 10 and as an examinations secretary in the 1990s.
- How much do you charge?
- Basically I charge £25-30 per hour for individual students but it depends on the distance I have to travel. I will negotiate a fee for a group of students
- Where do you teach?
- I teach in students' homes where they feel more comfortable. I can travel to other towns like Leamington Spa, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Banbury, Solihull and Birmingham but my work is mainly confined to South Warwickshire and the outskirts of Birmingham though I have tutored students in the Cotswolds.
- When are you available?
- I am available all weekday evenings from 4pm, including school holidays, now that I have retired.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I have tutored students age 8 to 19. At the younger age it is mainly Maths, English and 11+ preparation. From age 11 to 18 it has been History and Sociology to GCE and GCSE levels and I have prepared a student for the Oxford History Test and have helped an undergraduate with a History assignment.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I have a recent enhanced CRB certificate.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I set and receive work via my email address. I will endeavour to reply or mark work within 24 hours subject to other commitments. Marking will include suggestions for improvement where appropriate. Online tutoring is normally paid for in advance.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I belong to the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors to aid my work as an examiner for AQA and OCR
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I trained at Birmingham University and did teaching practice at schools in Birmingham.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- This year's 11+ students passed the exam except for one who has gone to appeal. Now I am preparing 4 new students for the exam and have a waiting list for others to start in September for the exam in 2013. My online A level student has achieved an A grade in his January re-sit. He and 4 other A level students are now working towards the summer exams with the main focus on essay style.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- You can only do your best at any given time. No tutor can sit an exam for you so you have to negotiate an effective approach with your tutor and stick to it. Determination, ambition and a willingness to listen to new approaches may be necessary for success.

Effective Essay Writing for 'A' Level History
The more students I tutor at 'A' Level the more I can see that they are usually conscientious enough to learn about topics and complete all the tasks set. Their essays are well set out in paragraphs with good English and yet they seem to get trapped at Grade C level or below. There is something missing - normally the ability to...
Parents in Touch website
I recommend the Parents in Touch website: www.parentsintouch.co.uk This website has a lot of useful information and advice for parents, especially in preparing for examinations and provides relevant worksheets for helping children at home for a small annual subscription. I have used it a lot for 7+ and 11+ preparation in English and Maths.

Richard is currently tutoring my son for his upcoming 11+ exam. From the first session Richard ascertained Edward's strengths and weaknesses and has structured the lessons accordingly. Edward felt at ease with Richard straight away and very much looks forward to their sessions. - Mrs Turner, Tysoe |

"We sought Richard's help with my son's History GCE re-sits. Richard taught him the important difference between describing History and evaluating it, and how to plan and write a coherent essay under exam conditions. Not only did he improve his history grades significantly, but he also scored very highly in an Economics paper purely on the strength of being able to write a well argued report. We only wish that we had found Richard sooner." - B. Withington, Dorridge |
