About Will

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching privately for nearly ten years, and for two years have been teaching drum kit at the Judd School in Tonbridge. As a performer, I'm involved in number of ensembles ranging from guitar/vocal duos up to a 9-piece funk band (see website), for which I play guitar and write arrangements. In the past I have played for a variety of ensembles including progressive metal, musical theatre, jazz combos and big bands, even a tour with a circus in 2010.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Enhanced CRB disclosure dated 7/12/2010.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I have been a member of the MU since 2004.

Music is my passion in life. Teaching is an opportunity to share that passion and pass on what I have been fortunate enough to learn and to be taught.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach the guitar and drum kit instrumentally; and ear training, music theory, and composition at GCSE, A-level. I can also tutor on essay writing, especially in subjects relating to music, such as history and analysis.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I studied music at Clare College, Cambridge and graduated in 2009. The papers I read in final year were Fugal Composition, Exploring Music Psychology, Unfinished Works, Klezmer and Song and Blues Cultures I also wrote a dissertation – “Are Lullabies Just For Sleepy Children or Sleepless Adults Too?”. Prior to studying music at Cambridge University, I studied the drum kit for a year at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, completing their Diploma course. I have also passed ABRSM Grade 8 on piano with Merit.

- How much do you charge?

£30 per hour is my basic rate for private tuition. Extra fees for travelling are subject to negotiation depending on distance, and I offer discounts for longer engagements if more than one subject or student is required. Likewise, I can offer discounts for block bookings (usually 3 hours at a time, spread over several sessions). Please get in touch for more information.

- Where do you teach?

I mostly teach in my studio at home but I do also travel, depending on circumstances, mostly distance and length of tuition session desired. I'm based in Kent, near the Hop Farm Country Park. This is about equidistant between Maidstone, Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells so I can travel roughly within this radius, but my music library and equipment are at my home so it is generally more suitable for students to travel to me.

- When are you available?

I am flexible and able to teach from 10:00 until 20:00 any day of the week (subject to availability regarding other gigs, rehearsals, and of course other pupils).

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach drum kit to all levels, from any age old enough to reach the drum pedals. Other subjects I teach to the levels indicated above.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

If students are interested, I enter them for the Trinity Guildhall grade exams. My pass rate is 100%, with the majority of my students achieving Distinction.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Subjects such as essay writing, music theory and composition can be tutored online. Pupils can submit essays, recordings of pieces or scores via email, and I can review them and respond via email or discuss them via Skype. I often can provide better value for money this way, as neither party has to travel, and I can take a couple of days to digest what is sent to me.
